Dr. Vernon F. McAllister, a Navy veteran and longtime Mid-Del educator, celebrated his 100th birthday last week at Tealridge Retirement Community in Edmond.

Born Sept. 7, 1925, in Foss, McAllister served in the U.S. Navy during World War II with the 33rd Special Construction Battalion in the Philippines. After the war, he earned degrees from Oklahoma City University and the University of Oklahoma, including a Ph.D. in education.

He spent his career in the Mid-Del School District, retiring as assistant superintendent in 1990, and later received the district’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

State Sen. Adam Pugh and retired teacher Nancy Williams honored McAllister during the ceremony. Williams also inducted him into the Centenarians of Oklahoma Hall of Fame.

McAllister and his wife, Delores, married in 1952 and raised three children. They now have five grandchildren.
