Reno Swim & Slide closes for 2026 season

Reno Swim & Slide has closed for the 2026 season because of critically low staffing levels, Midwest City officials announced today.

The facility had been operating on a weekends-only schedule since the week of Aug. 3-7. The closure means the pool will not reopen for the remaining weekends through Labor Day.

City officials said safety was the primary reason for the decision.

“Operating the pool at critically low staffing levels increases the risk of having a life-threatening incident at our pool,” officials said in a statement. “This is unacceptable.”

The city apologized to Midwest City families and regular patrons affected by the early closure and thanked the pool staff members who remained through the final weekend, as well as those who worked until school and college commitments required them to leave.

Officials praised the staff’s safety record throughout the season and their commitment to serving the community.

Looking ahead to next summer, Midwest City Parks and Recreation has been instructed to reopen a request for proposals to seek a professional pool management company to oversee aquatics operations at Reno Swim & Slide in 2027.

City officials said hiring a company that specializes in public facility management could help the city address ongoing staffing challenges and provide a better experience for residents and visitors.

Run, walk or roll for a great cause!

Mid-Del Group Homes is gearing up for its seventh annual Run, Walk or Roll for Independence on Aug. 22. The event includes a 5K and one-mile fun run, giving participants a chance to get moving while supporting Mid-Del Group Homes and its mission to promote independence for individuals with disabilities.

Registration is available at www.mdgh.org. Sponsorships and volunteer opportunities are also available.

Del City to hold public safety bond town hall tomorrow, Tuesday, Aug. 11

Del City residents will have an opportunity to learn more about proposed public safety projects and ask questions about an upcoming bond election during a town hall meeting Tuesday, Aug. 11.

The meeting will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Huey Long Community Center, 4505 SE 15th St.

City officials and department representatives will be available to discuss the proposed projects, answer questions and provide information about the bond proposal.

Voters will decide whether to approve the proposal in the Aug. 25 election.

Del City standout gives back with backpack giveaway

A former Del City basketball standout returned to his alma mater Saturday morning to help students get ready for the new school year with a backpack giveaway. Brandon Garrison, who now plays for the University of Alabama, handed out backpacks filled with school supplies and snacks, along with autographs for young fans.

Sponsors included: Del City High School, David Protection Agency, Vibe Alone Productions, Oklahomamagic.com, All Things by Sia Custom T-Shirts, and Dental Depot.

Garrison led the Eagles to a state title as a senior in 2023, earning Oklahoma Gatorade Player of the Year honors and a selection to the McDonald's All-American Game. He went on to play his freshman year at Oklahoma State before transferring to Kentucky, and now suits up for the Crimson Tide.

Midwest City hosted its annual Mommy and Son Splash-A-Palooza Friday night at Reno Swim & Slide, giving moms and their sons an evening of swimming, games and plenty of fun.

Guests took part in activities throughout the night, including cannonball and limbo contests, with prizes awarded to the winners.
