Join Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio This September
We can end hunger when we all work together.
LORAIN, OH – September marks Hunger Action Month, a time when communities across the country raise awareness of food insecurity. Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio (Second Harvest) believes it takes many hands – including yours – to make sure every person facing hunger gets the food they need.
On Hunger Action Day, September 9, from 3:30pm to 7pm, Second Harvest is opening the doors of the Nordson Food Distribution Center on Baumhart Road and inviting you to tour the facility, learn more about its mission and see how it ensures that everyone in Crawford, Erie, Huron and Lorain counties has enough food to thrive.
In our community, people are working hard to provide for themselves and their families, but an unexpected event like an auto repair or medical bill can mean money for food is moved to pay for something else.
“I am retired and disabled, and I live on a very fixed income,” said a neighbor at the Black River Landing monthly drive-thru mobile pantry. “I rely on Second Harvest to make ends meet because there's a lot of times, I'm short on money, food, everything.”
With the rate of people experiencing food insecurity the highest in more than a decade—nearly 50 million individuals, including families, seniors and children—and the largest cuts to SNAP and Medicaid in history recently signed into law, now is the time to come together and meet this moment with action.
Here are some more actions you can take this September to help:
• Volunteer at a Second Harvest Drive-Thru Mobile Pantry
• Contact your local elected officials and urge them to address food insecurity in your community by supporting nutrition assistance programs like TEFAP, CSFP and WIC
• Donate your lunch money. Every $1 provides 6 meals
• Attend Generous Helpings on September 28
• Follow and share Second Harvest’s work on social media
“Hunger Action Month is a chance for us to reflect on the tough choices our neighbors are making every day,” said Susan Bartosch, vice president of external affairs at Second Harvest. “It’s also a powerful call to action. Whether you attend Generous Helpings, tour Second Harvest, make a donation or share a social media post, every gesture not only provides immediate relief but also builds lasting food security for our community.”
Hunger Action Month culminates at Second Harvest’s 20th Annual Generous Helpings on September 28. It will be a memorable evening filled with delicious food, drinks and entertainment by Cats On Holiday raising funds vital to sustaining its impactful work.
