Fall Harvest Roundup
The 2025 Wayne County 4-H Fall Harvest Roundup was on Saturday November 1st at the Park Street Complex in Honesdale. The Fall Harvest Roundup is an opportunity for members who enter the pumpkin, onion, potato, turkey, or meat bird project to exhibit their projects, be evaluated by local experts, and hear critiques on how to improve their projects for future years. A total of 11 4-H members exhibited: 19 pumpkins in seven different classes, three potato entries, two onion entries, and six meat bird entries.

Two Wayne County Master Gardeners, Wanda Eisenhauer and Mary Fenton, served as official Judges for the 2025 Wayne County 4-H Pumpkin Round-up. The judging criteria that they used to judge the different classes of 4-H pumpkins included: pumpkins had to be uniform in size and shape, have uniform “orange color”, have a strong stem or handle, show no insect damage, no bruising and/or cuts and have no obvious skin defects. This year there were 19 entries into the 4-H Pumpkin Round-up by 6 4-H members, and the results are as follows:
Grand Champion 4-H Pumpkin-Channing Rutledge (Tri-Gal 4-H Club) with her pumpkin weighing 12.5lbs in the 11-15lb division.

This year’s Potato and Onion Judge was Wayne County Master Gardener Coordinator Ashley Sexton. The judging criteria for the 4-H Onion entries included: (5) uniform – in-size onions that are free from disease, insect damage, defects, and blemishes. Each onion should also have its green “tops” trimmed to about 1 ½ to 2 inches long, and root hairs should also be trimmed to ½ inch length. The outer layer of the onion should be removed to re-veal the clean bulb underneath for a polished look.
This year we had two entries into the 4-H Onion Round-up by two members, and the results are as follows:

This year’s Meat Bird Round-Up was judged by Zachary Curtis, Penn State Extension Agronomy Educator- Wayne County. Meat Birds were judged for the following desirable criteria: broad and meaty breast, back, and wings, large meaty legs, and indication of some body fat with skin that appears “yellow”. Each entry consists of two birds that should be of similar weight and equal conformation to indicate uniform management practices throughout the entire members’ flock. Members were required to exhibit two dressed, packaged market-ready birds for their entry. To be able to compete, each entry had to pass a temperature control test for food safety purposes.
Some of the defects to avoid and keep to a minimum would include: overscald, poor bleeding, excess water in the poultry bag, dirt on the skin, pin feathers, skin tears, bruising and breast blisters. If any of these defects were observed, points were taken off the 20 points each entry starts with.

DVAA Garden Party Fundraiser
COCHECTON — The Delaware Valley Arts Alliance (DVAA) invites you to its Summer Garden Party, a magical evening under the stars on Saturday, August 30 at Ladybug Land, a private artist-hosted garden in Cochecton Center, NY.
As the summer winds down, this festive outdoor gathering offers a chance to soak in the season’s final golden hour with farm-to-table dining, live music, handcrafted cocktails, a big bonfire, and a curated auction of one-of-a-kind local experiences, all in support of DVAA’s work sustaining the arts and culture of the region.
The evening will feature a vibrant, locally inspired menu crafted by celebrated chef Mercedes Golip, founder of the Casa Masa Project. Based in Bethel, NY, Mercedes draws on her Venezuelan heritage and a deep understanding of maize’s cultural significance to create dishes that are rich in story and flavor. Her cooking blends time-honored techniques with peak-season ingredients from the region, resulting in a meal that’s as soulful as it is unforgettable. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, America’s Test Kitchen, and Edible Brooklyn, among others.
Ladybug Land, lovingly cared for by local artists, offers the perfect setting: a landscape of open fields, tucked-away nooks, and creative touches that reflect DVAA’s values of imagination, hospitality, and connection to place.
Proceeds from the Garden Party help power DVAA’s year-round exhibitions, performances, and community festivals, including Riverfest and the Big Eddy Film Festival (September 25-28), while also supporting DVAA’s role in administering over $100,000 in arts funding to individual artists and local arts organizations across the region in 2025.
Attending guests won’t just enjoy a beautiful evening, they actively help sustain the region’s cultural ecosystem—a place shaped by artists, makers, and independent thinkers—and gather with others who believe in the power of the arts to enrich everyday life.
The event will take place at a private artist residence, located at 13 Old County Road, Cochecton, NY 12726.

Congregation To Hold BBQ
HONESDALE — The Congregation is holding a prospective member BBQ and will offer tours of the historic building on Friday, August 22 at 6:30 p.m. followed by Shabbat services at 7:30 p.m. at 615 Court Street in Honesdale.
Congregation Beth Israel, Honesdale, PA, recently celebrated its 175th anniversary. In September of 1849 eleven men met in a small home on Main Street in Honesdale, Pa. In the kerosene light, they pledged to form a Jewish congregation and to hold services for members of the Jewish faith. Eight years later, in September 1856, the first services were held in the congregation’s new building on Court Street.
More than 175 years later, Congregation Beth Israel is the oldest continually operating synagogue in America still in its original building, and descendants of three of the original 11 families remain involved with the congregation. Today, the sounds of young people talking and learning fill the pews, as do the songs and prayers of the small Jewish community that has endured on the site for nearly two centuries.
For information or to RSVP email [email protected] or call 570-253-2222.

MILFORD MOONS: Book-Lover’s Scholarship & Fundraising Event
MILFORD — Internationally renowned author and Milford Readers & Writers Festival Editorial Director Richard C. Morais will be launching his latest book, Milford Moons: A writer’s visual love letter to his ancestral village, with a book signing and fundraising exhibit of related photographs. This joyous and special event will take place June 7th between 12 – 2 pm at the historic and beautiful Hotel Fauchère at 401 Broad Street, Milford, Pa. 18337.
An award-winning Forbes and Barron’s business-journalist veteran, and the New York Times best-selling author of The Hundred-Foot Journey novel that was made into a major Hollywood film, Richard is also the fourth generation of his family to live in the village. Milford Moons, a coffee table book filled with over 250 photographs, is a moody and atmospheric celebration of his nightly ramblings through town with his dogs, visually capturing the mysterious, timeless, and deep connections he has with this Eastern Pennsylvanian village.
The book launch’s attending exhibit will showcase throughout the summer 20 hand-picked, limited edition (1/10) photographs from the book in the entry hall of the hotel. A generous portion from the sales of these framed and signed prints will be donated to the Pike Artworks “Book-Lovers Scholarship” that he is establishing on behalf of the Milford Readers & Writers Festival held this year on September 12th - 14th.
Aware that the festival’s passes are not affordable for some, Richard decided to spearhead a fund to purchase tickets that can be donated to deserving book lovers who would like to attend but otherwise could not. To that end, 25% of the profits from the sale of the framed prints will go to this
worthy case.
The public is invited to the free event to meet the author for this, the first (hot off the press) book-signing and art exhibit in the stately Hotel Fauchère.
