I’m Just Sayin…
Last Thursday was a gift—Sunny, temps near 50 and absolutely howling for most of the day.
I had obligations, but had a sailing window between 8 and 10 in the morning. This is the graph of the wind at the nearest meter to my beach.
Notice any discontinuities in the wind?

Tuesday after the hurricane was a perfect day for a sail. I went to the local beach and found a 25-mph breeze, 4-6-foot surf and a hundred spectators there to look at the devastation. I was about to rig, when I started to think: This was the very beach where just 14 hours previously, a guy had drown after deciding to jump off the pier and take a swim in the dark at the height of the hurricane. I guessed that all it would take for me was one missed jibe (a certainty), and somebody would dial 911, call in the fire department and make me a poster child for reckless hedonistic n’er-do-wells who put our first responders at risk. I went to a couple of beaches, but they were all crowded with gawkers.
So instead, I took pictures.

LET’S GET READY TO HURL
The Annual NEWJ/Fiberspar Board Hurl is on the schedule for 8pm of Saturday, April 28, during Frisco Wood WindFest XVII. If Hurricane Irene didn’t wash them away, the usual suspects will be there: the duct-tape-gripped, water-logged Mistral production board for the men; and the duct-tape-gripped, über-no-nose sandwich board for women and children.
If either of those breaks in half, the pintail polyester glass board is ready to fill in. WindFest action starts on Friday, April 27.

IT'S AWAY!
Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night…The April NEWJ is in the mail, and since there hasn’t been much snow or rain or heat recently, I am hoping that “gloom of night” will not slow down the NEWJ’s delivery to your mailbox. We’ve got pictures from the great sailing that happened over this mild winter, as well as a good list of upcoming happenings, and more.
Enjoy!

DESPERATELY SEEKING SOMETHING
Anybody have any recommendations for current instructional windsurfing DVDs? I have a collection of instructional VHS tapes, but most of them start with how to tie on a boom, so I have a feeling there might be something more current out there. I would love to hear if anybody has some recent personal experience with any. Thanks!
