During a recent trip to Pristina, the capital of Kosovo, Australian visual artist Deb Mostert () set out to sketch public monuments honoring politicians, academics and freedom fighters who paved the way for the independence of the country. The sketches were hastily drawn, she says, but they make for an inspiring collection.

If you didn’t receive Mostert’s reportage in your inbox, that means you have not subscribed to On the Spot yet.

To draw the poignant scene on the cover of this issue, Los Angeles sketch-journalist Joey Mason Art had to find his way into a neighborhood that had just been burned to the ground by a devastating wildfire. To capture the pulse of Berlin during an important election day in February, Rolf Schroeter interviewed and made portraits of voters at a polling station. His report, like other articles by Murray Dewhurst, Luis Ruiz Padrón and Fred Lynch, is the result of seeing, thinking and drawing like only humans can. The issue also includes a “Bookshelf” section with a review by Tina Koyama and highlights about other books we like.

More than 60 years since the late Franklin McMahon made a name for himself as a successful artist-reporter, few artists have been able to emulate his extraordinary body of work.

Will the current urban sketching boom inspire a new generation of visual storytellers to follow in his footsteps?

In this Artist Talk, McMahon’s daughter Deborah will join On the Spot editor Gabriel Campanario to converse about her father’s work and its relevance in today’s media landscape.

The conversation will be centered around three articles McMahon published in Sports Illustrated and Fortune magazine in the early 1960s. How did he manage to get published in such high-profile magazines? How did he get access to the events he covered? Is McMahon’s on-location approach to illustrating news-worthy topics feasible today?

On the Spot Artist Talks are free for Print+Digital subscribers ($29.99/year). If you are not a subscriber, you may purchase a $5 ticket to join the Zoom live and/or receive a link to the recording. See link on bio.
