During your visit to any Down Jersey saltmarsh or freshwater wetland in early spring through midsummer, you are likely to encounter one of our most abundant North American bird species, the red-winged blackbird. Many of us consider its distinctive “konk-a-ree” call to be a sure sign of the spring season on the marsh. This call that the male emits, often from a prominent perch, is quite distinctive and easily recognized even by the most novice of bird enthusiasts.

The “konk-a-ree” call is also accompanied by an insistent flaring of the male’s bright red shoulder patches as it displays from an exposed reed. When visiting the marsh, from early morning to evening, one may encounter multiple males calling from their perches, with their bright red patches edged with yellow glowing in the sun.

School is out later this month, the days are long, and the temperature is rising. For a safer, healthier summer, follow these American Medical Association recommendations:

1. Wear sunscreen. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30. Also, no sunscreen is waterproof. If you’re splashing in a pool or sweating in the summer sun, you’ll need to reapply every couple of hours or immediately after swimming.

2. Be water safe. Make sure everyone in your family achieves water competency skills. Teach children to ask permission before going near water, have inexperienced swimmers or boaters of all ages wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets, and always swim in lifeguarded areas at the beach.

3. Watch your diet. Reduce intake of processed foods, paying particular attention to added sodium and sugar. Add fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds to your diet. This doesn’t mean you have to give up summer barbecuing.

There are many ways to quantify the summer season. Memorial Day weekend signals the start of summer for beachgoers and vacationers across the United States. Weather forecasters declare June 1 as the beginning of meteorological summer, while others wait until the June solstice to welcome the arrival of astronomical summer.

Solar summer, one of the lesser-known versions of the season, has been with us for a full month. May, June and July are the months when the Northern Hemisphere receives the most sunlight due to the Earth’s tilt on its axis. Because of this, the three-month period is known as solar summer.

Despite the Northern Hemisphere receiving more sunlight from May through July than any other months of the year, it is usually not the hottest three-month span. This is due to a lag between when the Northern Hemisphere receives the most amount of sunlight and when the atmosphere is at its warmest point of the year.
