Jamrud Fort, known as “Jamrod Da Kila” in Punjabi, is a historic fort located in the Khyber Pass in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. Constructed in 1836 by the Sikh Empire under the command of General Hari Singh Nalwa, a trusted general of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the fort was strategically significant as it helped control the key trade and military route through the Khyber Pass connecting South Asia to Central Asia. This position allowed the Sikh Empire to monitor and control movements into and out of the Indian subcontinent.
The fort’s construction was part of a broader plan by Maharaja Ranjit Singh to expand Sikh influence westward into Afghanistan and secure the vulnerable frontier of his empire. Jamrud Fort quickly became a flashpoint between the Sikh Empire and Afghan forces. It was also the site of a famous battle where Hari Singh Nalwa was martyred in 1837 during a fierce conflict with the forces of Dost Mohammad Khan, the Emir of Afghanistan. Despite Nalwa’s death, the fort remained under Sikh control until the British took over following the annexation of the Punjab region in 1849.
Today, Jamrud Fort stands as a symbol of Sikh military architecture and resilience, representing the legacy of the Sikh Empire’s westward expansion. Its strategic location and historic significance continue to make it a point of cultural and historical interest.
