DOG PARKS 😆

🙅🏻‍♀️🙂‍↔️ you will never see one of my personal dogs in there!

I’ll be the jerk training outside of the fence. Against all the noise and behaviors. 😆😜

Kulu’s last training session at St Albans Dog Park. Ended with 45 mins of rest and watch.

Dog Parks are not places I feel comfortable visiting, they give me a lot of anxiety. Why? The high energy and chaos, with barking and dogs running everywhere, can easily lead to stress and even altercations.

When dogs are overexcited, they can become defensive quickly and may not respond to handlers.

Ohhh and humans. Typically sitting down, not paying attention to the dogs. 😬

Let’s also make mentions these dog parks have sober people in them!

Can you imagine these events or locations with alcohol?!

A big issue is that many people don’t recognize canine body language or know how to safely intervene if a fight breaks out.

It's common for well-meaning owners to get injured trying to separate dogs. 🤕

Tools like a water bottle or specific cues, such as "go," can help dogs understand boundaries and respect space, especially in homes with kids or new babies. (You can see this in all of my hiking videos. The dogs part the seas when humans walk through.)

The key is not just the tool itself, but consistent, patient training.

Ultimately, for ethical and effective dog training, it’s important for us as humans to remain patient and focus on clear communication with our dogs.

It makes you wonder and understand why, you see dog professionals on the outside of the fence and not the inside.

🚨 Many organizations ban certain training tools or strongly recommend one trainer over another.

But imagine how many dogs could thrive if we were open to different methods. 🙌

Think of the dogs whose behavior hasn’t improved, or has even gotten worse. All because of limited options.

Often, fear stems from the unknown. 😬

Yes, some trainers misuse harsh techniques, but they are the exception, not the rule.

🧘 Clarity comes from learning: understanding how to use the right tools, when to challenge a dog, and when to keep things simple.

Sometimes proper guidance means seeking help or trying new approaches.

Are we afraid of the tools themselves, or do we fear what we don’t understand?

Let’s keep learning together for the sake of our dogs. 🌟✨

Being a good community member and leader isn’t about belittling others in our field. ( I will advocate when we are seeing shifting things!)

It’s about holding each other up, and showing up for ethical trainers doing amazing work.

Over and over again.

I adore my friends and trainers I met when I was out in Idaho for Method K9.

Sometimes your mentors / inspiration end up being the person your sitting next to, and not the person your listening too.

Something about building relationships that really mean more than a number on a list.

You ladies are amazing and just two amazing people I am so honored to be in the fields with!

Special Guest and My Original Mentee:

The Hitch Hiker 🥾

🤔 People often ask if I know enough about children and dogs.

The truth is, I have two children Caspian and Elliott who both live and grow up with dogs. As their parent, it’s my job to make sure they have the best experiences with dogs.

Dogs teach children so much. One of the most important lessons is “respecting space” learning when and how to approach, and what kind of touch is appropriate.

Fostering respectful relationships helps both kids and dogs build confidence.

I love watching Caspian walk calmly into a pack of dogs no fear, just ease knowing he’s safe and confident, even when surrounded by thirteen dogs of all sizes!

✨Can you imagine being 5 years old, walk through sea of dogs. Your eyes at the same levels as their backs. No dogs jumping, bumping or running into you. ✨

Experiences like this are amazing for both children and adults, and I’m grateful to share this learning journey with my kids and anyone interested.

Want to learn how to do this?! Start your own camp! Train the dogs? Pick the dogs? Learn the skills they need?! Shadow opportunities are available this fall!

Muzzles | Proper Fitting

A muzzle is an amazing tool!

Let’s list the ways: 🌈

- Keeps our dog safe.
- Keeps humans safe from our dogs teeth.
- Provides safety for vetting / grooming / handling.

Proper fit of a muzzle can be a challenge!

🌟✨It’s cannot be to loose, or to tight! ✨🌟

Improper fit can caus:
- discomfort
- chaffing
- pressure sores
- Difficulty breathing
- Overheating

Or worse: the dog can still bite through it! 😳

✨✨

Behaviorally a muzzle can help the dog feel less defensive. It can give them and the handler confidence.

Taking training slow, can spending quality time can make a huge difference in your dogs outlook!

Did you know?!

When it comes to training effectively, to ween the muzzle it is a slow process and not owners or dogs get too. 💥🤔

Another great source about muzzling is: The Muzzle Movement

Fitting can be tricky, chat with your trainer in fitting a muzzle or if you need help with your dogs measurements for custom muzzles!

Muzzle is from Leerburg, after this photo we ended up making even another adjustment after a week.

Fitting a muzzle can take a moment, I do personally prefer having a couple muzzles for a dog so you have options of function and fit.

You can also play with a dog, with a muzzle 🤔 it’s amazing stuff!
