Exposure Plus TV we're making plans to change the narrative.

In today's hyper-connected world, we're drowning in content, yet often feel empty. We endlessly scroll through feeds, seeking a dopamine hit, only to find ourselves more disconnected and unfulfilled.

It's like eating junk food. It tastes good in the moment, but leaves you feeling depleted and craving something more substantial.

Our brains are wired for connection, meaning, and purpose. When we fill our minds with fleeting, superficial content, we starve ourselves of the emotional nourishment we need to thrive. This can lead to feelings of anxiety, depression, and a general sense of unease.

I've made a conscious effort to curate my feed with content that inspires, educates, and connects me to something larger than myself. I've started to engage in activities that nourish my soul, like spending time in nature, connecting with loved ones, and pursuing creative passions.

What if we started treating our minds like we treat our bodies? We wouldn't feed ourselves a diet of only junk food, so why do we do it with our minds?

Let’s reclaim our attention and nourish our minds with content that truly matters. Let’s be more intentional about what we consume and create a digital world that supports our mental and emotional well-being.

Dear Dreamers,
Exposure Plus TV

The road ahead might not be easy, but it’s for those who know that winning isn’t just a goal, it’s a necessity. Sure, it’ll be tough, but along the way, you’ll discover what truly pushes you to the next level. Not everyone will be there to cheer you on, but you can’t let their negativity hold you back. Sometimes, the best way to achieve your dreams is to go it alone.

ABC denied her a Disneyland pass—so she bolted for Netflix.
And in the process, she built her own magical kingdom.

We often talk about Shonda Rhimes the showrunner.
The creator behind the longest-running medical drama.
The architect of a prime-time takeover:

1️⃣ Grey’s Anatomy
2️⃣ Scandal
3️⃣ How to Get Away with Murder

All hits. All on the same night.
If the NFL owned Sundays, Shonda owned Thursdays.

But apparently, that still wasn’t enough for Disney.

One day, Shonda asked for an extra all-access Disneyland pass—so her sister and nanny could take her kids.

At first, a Disney exec told her no.
Even said her own pass wasn’t transferable.

But eventually, they relented for their biggest talent.
Yet when her sister and nanny arrived?
They were denied entry.

Shonda made a call to fix the situation.

The response?

“Don’t you have enough?”

Turns out, she didn’t.
❌ Not enough respect.
❌ Not enough control.
❌ Not enough compensation.

But she’d had enough.

So she left, passed go, and collected $100m from Netflix.

That move made her the highest-paid showrunner in television history. (Yes, a Black woman did that! 🔥)

But here’s the thing:
Like Disney did, Netflix still owns her IP.

Because Netflix isn't in the “creator ownership” business I preach.

They’re in the "own and aggregate all the content" business.

So Shonda made a strategic shift.

She couldn’t own the shows.
But she could own everything around them.

Since joining Netflix, she reimagined Shondaland, her production company, into a creative empire:
✅ Negotiated unprecedented backend participation
✅ Scaled to 30+ full-time employees
✅ Launched a podcast network (in partnership with iHeart)
✅ Took ownership of product distribution tied to her IP
✅ Designed real-life experiences based on her shows (events, merch, fan culture)

Leaving Disney wasn’t a petty walkout.
It was a power play.

This was never about making remote-control-stopping TV.
It was about taking control...of her business!

Today, her business model looks like this:
➡️ Create IP for Netflix (e.g., Bridgerton)
➡️ Expand it with extensions (e.g., Queen Charlotte)
➡️ Monetize around the IP (merch, events, experiences)
➡️ Bottle it inside the Shondaland brand
➡️ Distribute across platforms (podcasts, newsletters, branded content)

She doesn’t own the content.
She owns the context.

If this model sounds familiar, it should.

In today’s world—where streamers buy up all the IP—the savviest creators are building like Shonda:
📦 Own the infrastructure
🌐 Have multiple distribution points
🧠 Cultivate brand trust
💬 Build audience connection

Because media in 2025 isn’t just about owning IP.

In an AI-driven world of endless content, it can be about owning:
✅ The narrative.
✅ The brand.
✅ The platform.
✅ The community.
✅ The culture.

Whatever it is—own something!

And most importantly?
Be like Shonda...

And make sure nobody owns your creative freedom...
Or your Disneyland all-access passes! 🤣

When I launched Exposure Plus TV https://www.exposureplustv.tv I was screaming at the top of my lungs - WE CAN DO THIS TOGETHER - I GAVE AWAY AIRTIME, CHANNELS, TENS OF THOUSANDS IN APP DEVELOPMENT TO FOLKS - BUT WHEN IT COMES TO PEOPLE WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY IT'S NEVER ENOUGH -

WE ARE SO HARD ON OUR OWN THAT IT'S undeniable our own community that leads to this - SO STOP SAYING WE ARE TOGETHER WHEN WE ARE BROKEN BY OUR OWN- Contact Ms. Lawrence [email protected] (when you're ready to own your space in television, film, and media)

In 2013, Issa did a deal that meant she’d never own Insecure.
In 2025, Issa Rae now owns the entire ecosystem around it.

You probably know the story.

Insecure—the HBO series inspired by Issa Rae's viral YouTube series Awkward Black Girl—was a breakout cultural hit.

It launched a generation of creatives.
It cemented Issa as a once-in-a-generation voice.
It was, by many accounts, her magnum opus.

But here’s the thing:
She doesn’t own it.

❌ No stake in the IP.
❌ No rights to the characters.
❌ No sequel without HBO’s permission.

In the old Hollywood model, that’s just how it goes.
You create. They own. You get paid.
Rinse. Repeat.

And many creators stop there.

They take the overall deal.
They chase the next hit.
They give up leverage for security.

For the tippity-top-top, that works.
Shonda. Murphy. JJ.
They're all doing fine.

But for most creatives, a lack of ownership in their creations often means:

➡️ A lack of security.
➡️ A lack of future income.
➡️ A lack of creative independence.

So Issa didn’t stop there.
She didn’t cede lack of ownership.
She leveraged it.

With the reach and weight of HBO distributing her show, marketing it across North America, and campaigning for her Emmy nominations, Issa turned the reach, upfront cash, and exposure into:

HOORAE—a vertically integrated media machine that spans:

Production – Backing Black creatives via ColorCreative
Music & Audio – Via Raedio, now a music label and IP hub
Community – Patreon, Discord, YouTube, and IRL events
Brand Partnerships – Vis Ensemble, her branded content arm
Products – Hair care, coffee, wine, and community-rooted businesses

So, no, contrary to what I preach here all the time...
Issa didn't have to own her creation to become an owner.

Instead, she used the attention, access, and capital it gave her to build entities within the TV production ecosystem (music, ads, audience), so she could cobble up revenues by owning the TV infrastructure.

And now?

She’s not just starring in content.
She’s not just producing it.

She’s quietly building a 21st-century media empire—one that owns the soundtracks, the campaigns, the audiences, the products, and the cultural context.

Because Issa realized something early:

👉🏾 If you can’t own the platform, build the infrastructure.
👉🏾 If you can’t own the story, own the systems that tell it.
👉🏾 And if you can’t keep the IP, keep the community.

So no, Issa Rae doesn’t own Insecure.

But she’s making sure everything that comes after it...?

Is securely hers.

And FWIW, she does own the IP to "Awkward Black Girl".
