๐An AMAZING story with Milwaukee ties: How a 4 year old girl with cancer and a lemonade stand ended up raising $300 Million to fund childhood cancer research๐
When Alex, who was diagnosed with childhood cancer just before her 1st birthday, was 4 years old, she told her parents she wanted to set up a lemonade stand in their front yard. Her plan: to give the money to doctors to help them find a cure. Her first โAlexโs Lemonade Standโ surprisingly raised $2,000 in one day. While bravely fighting her own cancer, Alex continued to set up lemonade stands every year. As news spread of the remarkable girl so dedicated to helping other sick children, people everywhere were inspired to start their own lemonade stands โ donating the proceeds to her cause.
In 2004, when Alex passed away at the age of 8, her stand and inspiration had raised more than $1 million toward finding a cure for the disease that took her life. Alexโs Lemonade Stand Foundation was started by her parents in 2005 to continue the work that Alex began. Since its inception, it has raised more than $300 million and funded over 1,500 research grants to help kids fight cancer.
The local help from Milwaukee has been incredible as well -- since 2014 NNorthwestern Mutualhas raised over $36,000,000 and the event from Monday night put on my NNorthwestern Mutual Downtown Milwaukee raised nearly 400 hours of additional cancer research
The MMilwaukee Brewershave pitched in big as they are set to host Childhood Cancer Awareness weekend at the ballpark during the September 12-14 series against the Cardinals. Throughout the weekend, theyโll celebrate several Childhood Cancer Champions and raise awareness for the cause through a variety of fundraising efforts. As part of the effort, the Brewers will be donating $1 for every ticket sold that weekend back to Alexโs Lemonade Stand Foundation, up to $120,000, and there will be ways fans can directly contribute through round-up opportunities throughout the ballpark.
Throughout September, the Northwestern Mutual Foundation will pledge $100 to ALSF for each new financial plan delivered to prospective clients, up to $2M. Thatโs up to an additional 40K hours of research.
