“You Never Regret A Swim” with from the sold out DAYBREAK V.6 is now available to read in full online 🫶

For 20 years, has been a staple of the Great Lakes’ surf scene. The shop is located in Empire, MI, a small town at the base of Sleeping Bear Dunes at the north end of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. The storied dunes tower 450’ over the shores of Lake Michigan, and are the type of site people don’t expect to see in the Midwest.

SBS was started, and is still owned and operated, by the Skrocki family. Beryl and Frank Skrocki made the move from the East side of the state in 2004, opening the shop’s doors shortly thereafter. From the start, SBSK has been known as a community hub with always open doors.

From countless community events to becoming a founding member of the Great Lakes Business Network, Beryl was all in, all the time.

Late in 2022, an unexpected diagnosis took Beryl from the family and community she had meticulously and joyfully woven herself into. That day the spirits of Lake Michigan gained a giant.

20 years since Beryl opened SBS’s doors, has taken the reins on the shop. Though Beryl’s irreplaceable presence is missing, Ella’s hard at work upholding the role that SBSK has played in the community since its birth.

Small Business Saturday — is a gritty, working person’s magazine. While sometime’s the price points of our subject’s work is well out of reach (good on them for that) of the average person, the pages of DAYBREAK are filled with dirt, coffee grounds, and all the intangibles that have caused deep blue bags under our eyes.

As long as we’re doing this, we’re going to make our mags and merch as accessible as we possibly can. We won’t ever slap our name onto a garbage fishing vest and upsell it for $300 as a “film vest”. We’re here for you, and we’re here for the community.

Running a creative business isn’t for the faint of heart, and it’s not for anyone who isn’t willing to put absolutely everything into it. Sure, we estimate hours for quotes and invoices, but in reality it’s been years since I attempted to keep track of the ridiculous amount of time that goes into making this all a reality. There’s no clocking out… ever. Whether it’s waking up from an anxiety dream at 5am, or finally closing the laptop at 5am, there’s no off button. That said, I wouldn’t trade any of this for the world.

The DAYBREAK V.8 submission deadline is coming up quick! We know it’s primetime summer right now and that there’s no daylight to be wasted, but buckle down this weekend to get those submissions wrapped up and sent in to us by midnight on Sunday, August 10th.

Hell, who knows, maybe that story of a lifetime will come to you on Friday night.

Static w/ in the mountains of Montana for Live at the Landscape Lounge.

is a four-piece string band from Minnesota and Montana who threads the needle as the dance and stomp between folk, bluegrass, and indie.

We first met The Last Revel 8 years ago when our best friend drunkenly snuck into their green room after a sold out show. She ended up being more enamored by the plated grapes than the boys, so while I was pulling her off the vines the guys and I hit it off. That intrusive interaction somehow blossomed into a handful of my most cherished friendships to date.

The Last Revel just released their 6th studio record, Gone for Good, produced by of - We had the privilege of joining them in the studio as they recorded at in Cannon Falls, MN. With their most complete and concise record to date, The Last Revel is taking their biggest swing yet.
