That heart-shaped face does more than make Barn Owls unforgettable. 😍

The stiff feathers around a Barn Owl’s face help funnel sound directly toward its ears, allowing them to locate tiny movements in near-total darkness. Combined with soft, specialized flight feathers that help silence their wingbeats, Barn Owls are incredibly precise nighttime hunters.

Hey there friends... we love opossums. Like, we think they are amazing, adorable, and unfairly maligned.

But also, we need to stop perpetuating the myth that they eat massive amounts of ticks. It simply is NOT TRUE.

"In total, the literature presented the results of diet analysis of over 1,280 opossums from across their range in the United States. Not a single paper reported ticks being found in the stomachs, or in any other section of the gastrointestinal tract, of Virginia opossums."

Researchers have debunked a popular meme about Virginia opossums eating ticks. Careful analysis of opossum stomach contents (yes, the work of some researchers!) revealed many items, including worms, a French fry, broken glass and a shrew…but no ticks.

That bright orange isn’t the only thing attracting attention here.

Baltimore Orioles are well known for stopping at orange feeders during spring migration. The soft fruit gives them a quick source of energy, and their slender bills and specialized tongues help them feed on fruit, nectar, and insects as they return north for the season.

A flash of color, a few bites of orange, and another sign that spring has arrived in Wisconsin.

(189/250) The Blanding's turtle is found in parts of the Upper Midwest, Northeast and southern Canada, especially in areas with shallow wetlands near upland habitat. This semi-aquatic turtle is easily recognized by its bright yellow chin and throat.

Those blue markings aren’t random.

Flowers like this use bold patterns and lines to guide pollinators toward nectar and pollen, almost like landing lights for bees and butterflies. Even against bright white petals, those deep blue-violet markings stand out immediately in the sunlight.

Nature is full of signals once you slow down enough to notice them.

Look at that butt! 😆

Okay okay… technically we’re supposed to be photographing the face. But every once in a while, a bird turns around and reminds you just how incredible the feather detail back there really is.

This tiny Ruby-crowned Kinglet was showing off layers of perfectly stacked wing feathers, bright yellow edging along the tail, and those soft olive tones glowing in the sunlight. For such a tiny bird, the feather patterns are amazingly intricate up close.

Most of the time, these little kinglets never stop moving, so getting a clean rear-view photo like this almost feels rarer than the classic portrait shot.

This fuzzy caterpillar stopped us in our tracks.

With its bright yellow patches, black markings, and bristly hairs, it is clearly built to be noticed. Many hairy caterpillars use those bristles as protection, making them harder or less pleasant for predators to eat. Some can also irritate skin, so this is definitely a look, photograph, and let it crawl kind of creature.

Spring caterpillars can be tricky to identify because many species change appearance as they grow. Whatever this one turns into, it is already doing a great job looking memorable.

Do you know what kind of caterpillar this is? Let us know in the comments!

There’s a reason people get excited when they spot one of these.

Morel mushrooms have that unmistakable honeycomb cap, made up of deep pits and ridges that give them a textured, almost sponge-like look. Up close, you can see how each of those pockets forms a natural pattern across the surface. It’s not just for looks either—this structure helps increase surface area, where spores are released into the air.

They’re also completely hollow inside, from the tip of the cap down through the stem, which is one of the key ways foragers tell true morels from lookalikes.

Broad wings. Sharp eyes. Built to hunt.

The Red-tailed Hawk is one of the most common hawks in North America, often seen soaring high above open fields and forests.

With incredible eyesight, it can spot small animals from far away, then swoop down with precision to catch its prey.

Have you ever seen one circling overhead?
