In a major update to a five-year legal battle, a federal judge in California has dramatically reduced the $71.5 million jury award granted to T.I., Tiny, and the OMG Girlz.

Last fall, the jury awarded the artists $17.8 million in actual damages and $53.6 million in punitive damages in their case against toy company MGA Entertainment.

However, on July 8, Judge James V. Selna slashed the punitive damages to $1, reducing the overall award by 75%.

The judge ruled that the artists’ legal team had not proven MGA’s infringement was “willful.” T.I. and Tiny now have two weeks to accept the reduced award or request a new trial.

The case stems from the couple’s claim that MGA’s LOL Surprise! OMG dolls copied the OMG Girlz’ distinctive style. After a cease-and-desist letter in 2020, MGA sued the couple, who countersued for copyright infringement, triggering three headline-making trials.

The Harris family is now preparing for a new trial.
