“Work for a cause, not for applause.” -Dr. Mary Ellen Strong
Today we pay homage to another powerful black woman, Dr. Mary Ellen Strong. Strong was a pioneer for black owned business and corporations. After an unsuccessful run for alderwoman for the 16th district, Strong dedicated her life to giving back and providing for the black community in US and especially in Milwaukee. Between 1949-1954 Strong published The Negro Business Directory, which began her career in marketing, sales and publications. In 1963 Strong began the Milwaukee Courier and Courier Communications. In 1972 the first black owned radio station in Wisconsin, WNOV, was bought by Courier Communications Corp. Strong became the Founder and president of Welcome New Neighbors Service Inc. a national marketing company for black consumer. Strong also dedicated her life to word of god, working as a motivational speaker and later adviser to various church leaders.

“What did you do today that was good?” - Vel Phillips
Happy Black History Month! To celebrate we want to add some black excellence to your timeline by highlighting and honoring amazing black figures.
What better way to start than with Milwaukee’s very own Vel Phillips.

Phillips was a woman of many firsts. The first black woman to graduate from The University of Wisconsin Law school, the first female judge in Milwaukee County, and the first woman to be elected the Secretary of State in Wisconsin amongst many other firsts. Phillips was an active civil rights leader and worked tirelessly to bring equal opportunities to minorities for education, housing, social justice and much more.
