Celery is green, crunchy and flavorful. But did you know it also has a history in Milwaukee? 🥬

Carol Kaminski says she was told there was once a celery farm north of Mitchell Field, and she’s been wondering about it for years — until she finally reached out to Bubbler Talk.

“I’m having a hard time believing that because it’s celery,” Kaminski says. “Celery? In Milwaukee? So I would like to know if this is even remotely true, or what, in fact, was there.”

Lake Effect’s Xcaret Nuñez uncovers this little-known chapter of Milwaukee’s history in a new episode of Bubbler Talk.

Latino Arts’ annual Día de los Mu***os celebration brought Milwaukee’s community together to honor ancestors and celebrate Mexican heritage.

The night included a gallery filled with colorful ofrendas, altars created by local artists and organizations, and a performance by Ometochtli Mexican Folk Dance.

The event also marked the opening of Latino Arts’ Day of the Dead ofrendas exhibit, which featured installations dedicated to loved ones, places and even an ofrenda to water.

Melanie Ariens, artist and creative arts manager for Milwaukee Water Commons, says, “We combined art and science and made an ofrenda with diatoms, which is like the smallest little microscopic thing in the water.”

Alice’s Garden Urban Farm has strong roots in Milwaukee’s Black community. Located northwest of downtown, its history starts with displacement, after a highway that was never built forced African Americans out of Milwaukee’s original Bronzeville neighborhood.

After the land was cleared, a park and the garden were eventually built there. It’s named after Alice Mead-Taylor, the First African American executive director of Milwaukee County Extension. The 2.2 acre farm also sits on the site that marks the beginning of Wisconsin’s underground railroad.

Venice Williams, the farm’s executive director, believes culture deserves to be celebrated and reclaimed in agricultural spaces.
