Milwaukee DPW held a public involvement meeting tonight on the S. 2nd Street Protected Bike Lane project.
The 1.9-mile project would connect Downtown, Walker’s Point, Clock Tower Acres, and the Harbor District via S. 2nd Street, running from W. Michigan Street to W. Maple Street. It’s part of the city’s commitment to 50 miles of protected bikeways under construction or in development by 2026. Tonight’s meeting was an opportunity for residents and business owners along the corridor to weigh in on the design before it moves forward.
The plan is detailed. Curb extensions at key intersections, parklets, scooter parking, and preserved car access are all part of the proposal. The project also includes a connection to the KK River Trail via E. Maple Street, and from there a funded extension continues one mile south into Bay View, eventually linking with the Oak Leaf Trail’s South Shore Line at Russell Avenue. In Walker’s Point, protected lanes on Pittsburgh Avenue would tie into the Hank Aaron State Trail. The project is being delivered in phases, with the railroad bridge between W. Florida and W. Oregon Streets presenting the primary infrastructure challenge to extending the corridor further.
One conversation worth having before construction begins: how this redesign affects pedal taverns and commercial tour operators like City Tours MKE, who are active along this corridor. There’s still room for that voice in the process.
