The Bellerose Fire Department's equipment is among the oldest in the county — but a grant of nearly $1 million will give these first responders the trucks they need to serve their community.

“This grant is not just a number, it’s a vital investment in the safety of every single resident and business in the Bellerose community,” said Fire Department Chief Raul Sanchez.

The $938k grant, presented by U.S. Rep. Laura Gillen, will help buy the fire department a new fire truck and also help ease residents' tax burden, she said.

Holiday travelers flying out of John F. Kennedy International Airport may not realize their trip begins closer to Long Island than they think: The person overseeing the daily operations of Terminal 4, one of JFK’s busiest gateways, is a Manhasset resident.

“Aviation has something magical,” said Roel Huinink, CEO of JFK International Air Terminal. “It’s about flying. It’s about traveling. I really like to enjoy travel and work in different cultures.”

Though he oversees major decisions for the terminal, Huinink said his daily work often centers on walking the terminal and speaking with staff. “Sometimes I call myself the mayor of Terminal 4,” he said.

Thanks to two teens, more than 50 volunteers participated in a shoreline cleanup at Udalls Cove. The cleanup was “the biggest contribution they had so far," a rep of the Udalls Cove Preservation Committee said.

Many of the volunteers were teens, young families and Boy Scouts, said Joseph Shemesh, a high school junior who helped coordinate the event.

“Usually, it’s like adults doing these things,” Shemesh said. “So to have a bunch of younger families just contributing and loving it – it was pretty great.”

The City of Glen Cove is looking to prohibit ma*****na use in public places.

According to the proposed law, “no person shall smoke or v**e any ma*****na or cannabis product in any outdoor public place within the jurisdictional limits of the city.”

The legal move against ma*****na is not new from the council. The city enacted a zoning law in July 2023 that significantly restricted the locations where new smoke shops could be established within Glen Cove.

Concerned residents and environmental activists gathered last Sunday at Kings Point Park to protest what they described as a lack of transparency in plans to convert nearly 2.5 acres of parkland into a private parking lot and recreational facilities.

“We love our parks," said Jody Kass Finkel, a longtime Great Neck resident and head of Concerned Citizens of NY-03. "We have a right to know what is being planned, and we demand to be part of the decision-making about our parks.”

The Village of Kings Point applied for a permit that would allow the village to fill wetlands, cut down trees, excavate in an archeologically sensitive area and construct a parking lot on a 2.5-acre section of Kings Point Park, Kass Finkel said.

Monroe University star basketball player Amira McCleod was fatally shot on Nov. 22 in Hempstead, according to Nassau County Police.

McCleod was a sophomore studying business administration, according to the school’s website.

On the same day as the shooting, McCleod tied a season-high with four steals and played in a season-best 30 minutes in Monroe’s victory over Dutchess Community College.

Two other victims of the shooting were both 20-year-old males who were hospitalized, according to police. The investigation is ongoing.

He'd been an entertainment lawyer whose creative ambitions took a backseat to his corporate job — but everything changed after Xiomaro was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

“I didn’t know if I was going to live or die,” he said. “It got me thinking that maybe it was time to pursue my own creativity instead of helping everyone else pursue theirs.”

That's when he started pursuing his real passion: photography.

The Roslyn Heights native's work is being published in "Street Photography of New York City," which features striking images, such as the one below, capturing the people, politics and overlooked details of New York City.

Rory Rosegarten bubbles with enthusiasm when talking about executive producing ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’.'

Rosegarten, who has been part of the show since its inception, is a loyal Long Islander who grew up in Great Neck and currently resides with his family in Manhasset.

Of the years spent flying back and forth between New York to LA for the show, he said, “I’m a Long Island guy through and through. When I did “Raymond,” I commuted from Wednesday to Friday about 28 weeks of the year for nine years. I wasn’t gonna move!”

To celebrate the show's 30th anniversary, he collaborated with the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame to create an exciting interactive exhibit — which opens today — that invites the public into the Lynbrook home featured in this beloved sitcom.
