Thomas Mascia, 27, of West Hempstead, was sentenced to six months in jail and ordered to pay $289,511 after shooting himself and lying about it.

The former state trooper shot himself in the leg last year, called in shots fired and told his fellow officers he was shot by a "dark-skinned man" who fled near Malverne, according to the Nassau District Attorney's office. The lie resulted in a multi-state manhunt for a man who didn't exist.
