Today's comes to us from Howard Bee of Cherry Grove, as the waxes to reach peak fullness on Thursday, July 10 at 4:37 p.m. Eastern Time. Why is it called the buck moon? Our local residents tell that story as their antlers, still in velvet, reach their own peak size. In about six to eight weeks, their velvet will begin to shed, and friends will joust as they prep for rutting season. An alternate name for the July moon is , and Fire Islanders got a sample of why that is so just last night. We are still in what is called a lunar standstill, so the moon will appear large and low on the horizon. Shutterbug contributions are, of course, welcome.
