Once upon a time Johnstown had a Central Park that was the envy of most towns of this size. It was a quiet, shaded place where city folk could sit, relax, meet friends and unwind, if only for a few minutes, on a hot summer day. Then "leaders" decided that wasn't enough.

They decided to cut down trees that were 50-60-70 years old to make room for an entertainment venue. Look at the pictures ... already at least two shade trees have been ripped down, and this is just the beginning! And you can't see the other demolition being done because of the nearly opaque fence they put up around the entire perimeter! Hiding something? What do you think?

Of course the park needed improved upon ... new sidewalks, lighting, wiring for events like the Christmas village, etc., but this? In 25 years or so the tiny trees they plant will grow enough to provide some shade. How nice for the folks in 2050.

Here's a beautiful drone shot I took 8 years ago. This spot is still as awesome as it was then. Might be worth a trip to Loretto for a relaxed walk around the garden. What amazing places we have right in our own back yard!

We went to the Highland Health fund raiser at PNG Place Saturday night. We were glad to help sponsor the event, and hope they raised a ton of cash. They do great work in our community!

If you're an ATV guy or gal, you won't want to miss a trip to Rock Run before summer fades away. Here's a piece I did a few years ago ... looks like a blast!

Bedford Village is a great place to visit, especially with children or grandkids. Here's a drone video I did a few years ago. Take a few hours this summer for a voyage to our past.

Take a close look at this drawing. The people who want to repurpose Central Park in Johnstown say this is how the park will look when they are done, presumptively by summer of next year. This drawing is deceptive! Look at the size of the people in the drawing versus the size of the trees. The newly planted trees in this drawing would be 25 to 30 feet tall if this sketch is to scale. It will take about 25 years for Central Park to look like this!

This drawing basically shows how the park will look in 2050!
Many of the current trees, some over 60 feet tall and more than one hundred years old, will be cut down and thrown away.

Is this what you want? Is this what Johnstown needs?

Just a note of thanks to the Cresson Lake actors and staff for an outstanding performance of "Shrek, the Musical." 40 actors on stage (all wonderfully cast) in tons of zany costumes singing and dancing like professionals! This is what 'community theater' is all about. It was an evening I'll remember for a long time. Bravo!!

WOW! What a weekend! Rebecca, daughter Deanna and I met my brother Doug in NYC at the Marriott Marquis Hotel (on Times Square) and selected three musicals we wanted to see, and amazingly we got great seats for all three.

Friday night we saw "Death Becomes Her" starring Megan Hilty (from the NBC series "Smash"). She was sensational and hilarious ... think of a beautiful blond Carol Burnett .... super comic timing and expressions!

Next day we did two shows. First was the opulent "Moulin Rouge." As they say in the show, this was a "spectacular spectacular" with dazzling sets and wardrobe and dancing! Such incredible talent in each performance. We saw this from the first row ... what an experience.

After an obligatory lunch at Juniors, we saw "The Outsiders" based on the book by the same name. This show is much more somber and far less showy than the other two. Great acting/singing along with an outstanding fight scene in the pouring rain ... on stage! Impressive!

And of course the orchestras that played for all three shows were thrilling to listen to. I'm always amazed that hundreds of individuals come together 8 shows a week to put on incredibly complex performances and each one appears to be flawless! I guess that's why we go to New York every couple of years. It's simply the best.

Here is my Letter to the Editor in today's Tribune Democrat:

Let me begin by saying I’m fully aware that I am not the audience for the AmeriServ Flood City Music Festival. I’m old … way older than I ever intended to be. And the festival folks need to aim their shows at a much younger, more “with it” crowd. I understand that.

But in spite of my advanced age, I thought I’d enjoy hearing a few of the 18 bands that are scheduled. I was a DJ at one time and have always loved good music. I figured I’d check out the groups by reading the full-page article published in the Trib.

Unfortunately, what I found was like reading another language. The adjectives used to describe some of the entertainers were: psychedelic funk, hypnotic hybrid, kaleidoscopic music fusion, psychedelia, alchemical synthesis, electronica, sloshy rock, early punk, aethereal rock and my favorite, boozy sophistication.

Maybe those adjectives mean something to someone, but not to me. I’m certain that the 18 bands chosen to perform are quite good, have excellent talent, are well rehearsed and put on a good show, but I’m afraid “psychedelic funk” et al is not my cup of tea.

I would have loved to see the music from two or three groups described as beautiful and melodic with wonderful tight harmonies, great musicianship and songs you’ll whistle as you leave. (Does anyone whistle anymore?) Songs you tap your foot to, songs that make you smile, songs that bring back cherished memories … that would be nice.

I’m delighted that the music festival is such a success, and I appreciate all the behind-the-scenes people who work so hard make events like this possible. Thanks for bringing such an event to Johnstown!

We enjoyed a performance of "Showstoppers" at St. Vincent's Summer Theater Sunday afternoon. Professional talent singing some of the best songs from about 30 Broadway musicals ... it was sensational. They have one more show in a few weeks - "Forever Plaid."

Demolishing Johnstown's Central Park is a mistake that CANNOT BE UNDONE Here are a few voices in Central Park. Do you agree with them?

07/03/2025

Johnstown's Central Park as we know it is about to disappear! Most of the 60-year old trees will be cut down! The fountain will be yanked out and hauled away! Many of the grassy areas will become cement! The only green space in downtown will be gone all to create an "activity area" for concerts.

This is a mistake that cannot be undone. Please watch the video and make a decision ... should our Central Park be demolished?
