Carol’s Last Christmas Episode 17 - Last Man Standing

Our list of known living suspects has now dwindled to one. In this episode we focus on the Last Man Standing, who at one point offered to tell all, but McLean county authorities refused his request for immunity. Was he the “lookout”, waiting for Carol to return home from the Cellar? Why did he cut his hair and suddenly leave town when the heat was on? His wife at the time pleaded with police to believe her suspicions. Our team tracks down the Last Man’s former sister-in-law who has quite a story to tell.

Exciting news. We have been working with the university to create a memorial for Carol. A memorial bench on the Quad has been approved, and the cost will be $4,500. We have created a fundraiser to pay for the memorial. Any additional funds raised will go towards planting a memorial tree(s) in her honor around campus.

Anything at all helps. Please share and spread the word so we can give Carol a memorial she deserves!

Episode 16: BREAKING NEWS: Gone, but Not Forgotten

15 months after admitting he was on the crime scene the night Carol was attacked, and after calling Genuine Human's lead investigator George Seibel twice, we learn that suspect #1 has gone permanently silent. Rest assured, this does not mean an end to the investigation. It might encourage long locked lips to tell what they know. More to come from Carol’s Last Christmas.

Episode 15: I Had Trouble with a Guy in Class

Just how often were women being attacked in the 1970's at or near Illinois State University? The Genuine Human team explores crimes that were reported to police but largely unknown to the public. And some are strikingly similar to the fatal attack on Carol, including an another assault with a tree limb. It's no wonder George sees some common threads.

50 years ago today, marks the first attack on Carol Rofstad by an unknown assailant. In the summer of 1974, Carol decided to stay on campus to catch up on her credits after transferring to ISU. Being a newly pledged Delta Zeta, she was able to stay in the sorority house with her sisters. But on the night of July 16, everything in Carol’s world was about to change.

A masked intruder broke into the sorority house by breaking a window. He cut the phone lines,(except for the phone lines in the basement) slipped inside and located Carol’s exact bedroom. He snatched her from her bed, threatening her if she made a sound. Being the smart girl she was, Carol screamed, alerting the whole house of the intruder. The man picked her up and threw her into the bookshelf, breaking her nose, and sprinted down the hallway before anyone could get a look at much more than his shadow.

Listeners of the podcast, and many Delta Zeta sorority sisters know him as “Mr. Green jeans” because of his army green style work pants and work boots he wore when he was fleeing the scene.

The police report on the attack was short and brief. This incident, along with Carol’s eventual murder remain unsolved by the Normal Police Department.

Carol was never the same again after that attack. Little did anyone know the significance this attack would have just 17 months later.

We remember Carol’s bravery today and wish she could still be here with us.

Episode 14: Let's Get Back in the Game

After a 15 month production hiatus (requested by law enforcement), the Genuine Human team is back on the case. And you won’t believe what we’ve been sitting on! Persistence leads the prime suspect to make phone calls…old habits are hard to break. Normal police are dealt a blistering blow for a murder case that was botched decades after Carol’s. Will it help or hurt future cold case momentum?

Today we remember the life of Carol Ann Rofstad.

Carol was born on March 10, 1954 in Elk Grove Village, Illinois, to Robert Rofstad Sr. and Lillian Votipka. She was the oldest of three children, and was certainly a big sister that anyone would be lucky to have. She was her parents' pride and joy. She attended Elk Grove Village high school where she was involved in extracurriculars. Carol originally decided to attend Illinois Wesleyan University, but later transferred to Illinois State University where she majored in psychology. She joined the Delta Zeta sorority and quickly fit in with the rest of the girls. Carol was eventually elected as treasurer of the sorority. Carol's sorority sisters remember her as exceptionally classy and kind. She was very well-spoken and intelligent, especially in her studies. But she wouldn't let others talk down to her, and stood up for herself and others often.

Carol's memory remains vivid among those who knew her, and our team's goal is to make sure she is remembered and people continue to say her name. Carol would be 69 years old if she was still here. I think of her every single day. I imagine what career she would have entered in. I imagine her preparing for the Christmas season with her children and grandchildren. Wrapping presents, eating a big dinner, sharing stories and memories. Carol deserved all of this and more. But somebody took that away from her.

I believe we will get justice for Carol, and I know she is watching. We will get justice for you.

Rest in peace, Carol.
