Floral heart threading 💐❤️

If your sweetheart should gift you with some flowers this Valentine’s Day, and if those flowers should start to fade (which they all do, sadly,) let your kids develop some better fine motor skills with this simple recycled activity.

You can even tie a string at the top and hang it up for a day or two before the flowers fully fade. My kids loved this activity last year, but I think if I buy flowers this year, I’ll likely press or preserve them. And yes, I do buy them myself 😆 my husband and I don’t really do Valentine’s Day.

Anyone else not really buy into all the commercialism of allll the holidays? Sweet and thoughtful little gifts are great, but the last we we need is more stuff we don’t actually need, you know? And I’d way rather get a sweet little gift on a random day just because. That just means so much more for some reason.

Anyways, if you find yourself with some beautiful flowers this month and they start to wilt, maybe try this fun little project. And let me know if you do because it just makes my day to see you doing fun stuff with your fam 🥹

I know I’ve said this before, but it bears repeating:

You don’t have to do it all this season. I know how overwhelming it can feel to be bombarded by all the ideas when you hop on this app. It’s partially what makes it so addicting - a constant stream of beautiful, brilliant, inspiring, or entertaining. It can be hard to turn it off.

But at the end of the day, despite contributing to that constant stream myself, I would much rather you silence your phone and just be present with your loved ones.

I share lots of fun ideas because this is an extension of our self-employment. One that I hope helps to alleviate a lot of the pressure my husband feels as he runs our other business. It’s one reason I share so much, along with genuinely loving connecting with people AND creatively expressing myself in whatever way I see fit.

I don’t do it because I have all my sh*t together all the time. I don’t. In fact, I often procrastinate on the household chores with things like making play dough 😆🙈 No one likes doing laundry.

So instead of scrolling and feeling like you’re simply not doing enough, let me assure you - you’re probably doing too much. Slow down, connect with your loved ones, and relax a bit. Maybe that includes some crafting or some baking, or maybe it includes doing nothing but watch the snow fall.

Don’t fall into the trap of believing you need to do it all, as so many in our society do. Stop over scheduling and start reconnecting. With your family, your friends, your hobbies and passions, the season, with nature, and even with yourself.

Life is about so much more than most of us believe. And it’s in doing less that we come to realize it. ❤️

Just in case you needed an excuse to incorporate more mushrooms into your seasonal decor,

Folklore has it that the amanita muscaria mushroom has deep roots in holiday culture. That it is, in fact, the reason we have a Santa.

Theories differ, but many source the mushroom’s psychedelic nature as the source of Santa and even his flying reindeer. Even the red and white colors themselves are symbolic.

According to ,

Originally, the figure of Santa Claus came from the Nordic countries. In this region, Arctic shamans used to dole out psychedelic mushrooms as part of their winter solstice celebrations. They dressed in red clothing with white spots, similar to Amanita mushrooms. People enjoyed a magical experience and communed with nature on the night of the solstice. Just like Santa enters homes through the chimney, Arctic shamans typically entered snow-blocked homes through an opening in the roof.

Nordic shamans had a deep connection with reindeer as well. They were generally recognized as the spirit animals for the shamans. Under the influence of magic mushrooms, it’s easy to see how someone could hallucinate flying reindeer beneath a beautiful night sky in December.

There’s another interesting connection between mushrooms and the tradition of gift-giving at Christmastime. Most people put up an evergreen tree inside their homes to mark the holiday. Gifts are wrapped and placed underneath the tree. Mushrooms also tend to grow at the base of trees, where decaying organic matter can feed the fungi. It’s more than a coincidence that people leave red and white presents underneath their pine trees on Christmas.

This year, honor the history of Nordic shamans at Christmas. Create some delightful mushroom-shaped ornaments to hang on your tree and share the story of the Arctic mystics who delivered gifts in the middle of the night, assisted by their sleigh and reindeer. Spread your newfound knowledge of the connection between Christmas and mushrooms!”

Fascinating right?! Did you know this? This was new info to me a couple years ago, and now I love the fly agaric even more this time of year!
