A summer cottage with a serious soft spot for the past.

For this longtime family estate, a neglected guest cottage was reimagined as a colorful, easygoing retreat for the next generation of house guests—with cobalt shutters, a sky-blue banquette, scalloped cabinetry, vintage rattan and plenty of charming details that feel like they’ve been there forever.

The result is part summer house, part family scrapbook—and exactly the kind of place made for long visits, old stories and new memories.

After renovating architect Todd Hansen’s former Minneapolis bungalow years ago, these homeowners reconnected with him to design their family’s dream summer cottage on a private island in Lake Minnetonka. Accessible only by boat, the charming retreat was thoughtfully crafted to honor the island’s historic character while embracing everything that makes cabin life so memorable—from a screened porch with sunset views to an outdoor shower and spaces designed for gathering.
