The heat of the restaurant and bar scene was to the west in the North Loop or the east in the Mill District. A change was needed and it came in the form of Jamie Malone, the woman who had turned the Grand Cafe in south Minneapolis into a winner.

As pop stars and tech companies will tell you, reinvention is key to long-term survival. Your first idea may not be the idea that paves the road ahead. Eastside, an upscale-casual bistro at 305 S. Washington Ave., across from the Milwaukee Depot, opened three years ago, and thanks in part to the

A glib but fair description is that Studio/E is a membership networking organization of doers looking for ways to get even more done.

We have no science on this, but the betting is that pretty much everyone who is anyone (or wants to be someone) in Twin Cities business and government has met Nate Garvis, and that for sure all of them have heard of him. A familiar figure and voice on the landscape for his 18 years as Target’s vi

The St. Anthony Main area in the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood across river from downtown is now a long, long way removed from its blue-collar origins. When even Nye’s has been rebuilt with an emphasis on beverages more upscale than Grain Belt and Old Fashions, it comes as no surprise that someone wou...

In many cases, the city is testing out new infrastructure and monitoring it in different seasons to see how it is functioning and how it can be improved.

Minneapolis streets are constantly evolving. Many recent changes are products of two policies: Complete Streets, which prioritizes people walking, biking and taking transit, and Vision Zero, which seeks to eliminate fatalities and severe injuries that are a result of crashes on city streets by 2027.

Called simply Houser, the barely 1,000-square-foot shop features simple but elegant handcrafted silver jewelry.

The saying goes, “Everyone has a story.” Some are just a bit more interesting than others. Down on North 2nd Street, around the corner from the Monte Carlo, Denise Houser has recently opened her first retail shop. And a new chapter in her life. In the process she’s putting to work a team of pe

Opening in the chill of late 2017, the second restaurant from the husband-and-wife team of Birk Grudem and Christina Nguyen (Hola Arepa in the Lyndale neighborhood is no. 1) was barely six months old when Eater’s roving restaurant critic Bill Addison declared Hai Hai one of “The 18 Best New Restaurants in America.”

Saying that Hai Hai, the Vietnamese street food restaurant that took over the space of a seedy old strip club on the corner of 22nd & University, has had a good year is, as understatements go, a bit like noticing Beyonce has a few adoring fans. Opening in the chill of late 2017, the second re

Do you think you know anything, really, about the cider business? The guess here is that you don’t. For a lot of people, maybe most, cider is just some fruity variation on “the craft beer thing.” In the interest of saving time, let’s just say you’re wrong and bring in Jason Dayton, one of ...

Long-time carriers reflect on the end of The Journal:

Before he began delivering newspapers nearly 25 years ago, Lyle James did janitorial work and assembled items like coloring books for a local daycare company. That job didn’t provide much work for him during the summers, so he picked up a delivery route for the Star Tribune. Immediately, James wa

All over the world, and even right here in Minneapolis, there are individuals and organizations that are working to make the better place.

As much as you may want to, you can’t solve all of the problems of the world in one fell swoop. Bummer, right? Every day, we are inundated with terrible news: environmental devastation, the horrible conditions faced by immigrants, poverty, homelessness, racial disparities and much more. The go

Linda Koutsky reflects on 18 years of writing columns for the Journal:

I was in elementary school when Skyway News first appeared on news racks in 1970. Later, in high school, my best friend Marta and I often hung out at the glitzy new IDS Center Crystal Court. We rode the bus from Golden Valley. Suburbia felt far away when we set foot on the corner of 6th & Hen

Former editors look back on their time at downtown’s community newspaper.

What can I tell you about editing The Journal? Well, not as much as Tim Lyke, David Brauer and Sarah McKenzie can. All three former editors spent much more time steering the paper then my two-plus years. For this final issue, I asked Tim, David and Sarah to reflect on their time with paper and
