Let’s talk about cold weather and dog safety.

This post is focused on outdoor dogs who are acclimated to colder temperatures—the ones who live outside year-round and have had time to adjust. Even then, cold weather is tough. While some dogs may be surviving outside, that doesn’t mean they’re thriving. Most are still very cold, uncomfortable, and often miserable as temperatures drop.

It’s also worth noting that dogs who live inside get cold much faster, since they aren’t adapted to long-term exposure. A short amount of time outside in freezing temperatures can be dangerous for them.

The guidelines included in the graphic are general recommendations to help keep outdoor dogs as safe as possible, but every dog is different. Breed, age, body condition, shelter quality, wind, moisture, and length of exposure all matter.

If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them. No dog deserves to be left outside in the cold.
