Did you know Super Bowl LII was zero waste? ♻

It's hard to imagine an event as large as the Super Bowl being able to be zero waste 🗑, but Super Bowl LII at US Bank Stadium achieved just that. With the help of PepsiCo, staff worked around the clock collecting and sorting waste to achieve 91 percent of waste diverted from landfills through the stadium’s investment 💵 in top-of-the-line infrastructure and efforts in building a sustainable, environmentally friendly operation.

During our research for our Intro To Sustainability In Sports episode (available here: https://open.spotify.com/episode/5k2YuaX7DrM6lNQSBP50rO?si=71904eeb228b4431) we had the opportunity to discuss the challenges of diverting waste from landfills. A couple strategies we learned about were:

👨‍🔧 Hiring staff to stand near waste bins to assist fans with sorting 👩‍🔧
⛹‍♂️ Telling fans to leave waste by their seats so staff can sort after the event ⛹‍♀️
📜 Having vendors agree to only use recyclable and compostable materials 📜

What are your thoughts on this quote?

There is often a lot of pushback against sustainable investments with people citing its high upfront cost. However, with each new stadium being built, it seems that the installation of low flush toilets, usage of grey water, and waste sorting infrastructure are no longer something that's bold and innovative, but instead the new standard.
