Spout Press

Spout Press Serving weird writers since 1989 We have firmly established ourselves as the longest running and most stable literary journal in the Twin Cities area.

Spout began as a quarterly literary journal back in 1989, and after 23 years we have garnered a national following, publishing the finest in contemporary experimental writing. The vision of the journal has always been to create a community through words, a hodgepodge of beliefs, and emotions from all facets of society. This community is both national and international, connected by our secret miss

ion: to bring literature down to our level and then hide in the dumpster with it. The success of the journal has provided us room to expand into book publishing. Spout became Spout Press with the release of our debut book in September of 1997, A Definitive Guide to the Twin Cities. Spout Press combines the spirit of the journal with a commitment to publishing on a larger scale, highlighting the best Twin Cities and regional writers. We endeavor to publish the best in experimental fiction and poetry with new issues of Spout Magazine. As we continue to grow, we are reaching out to a new and wider audience. We hope you will become a part of this audience, join the Spout community, and find out what Spout is really about. We’ll see you in the dumpster?

We’ve had a good year! We’ve had a full year with our new best distributor friend ever, Asterism Books. We returned to AWP for the first time in over a decade. We expanded our collective to six active members, and we’ll soon debut a brand-new website. Oh, and our most-recent title Locker Room Talk: Women in Private Spaces won at the Minnesota Book Awards for Best Anthology! We held in-person events in St. Paul with the East Side Freedom Library, Duluth with the Minnesota Humanities Center, and held a celebratory concert and reading in Minneapolis at The Hook and Ladder Theater & Lounge with contributors Kao Kalia Yang, Alison McGhee, Casey Jarrin, and bands Kith + Kin Chorus, Squinny, and whispered the rabbit.

We’ve done a lot, and we’ve had fun doing it! And we want to do more. That is why in 2026 we will be relaunching Spout Magazine on our brand new website!! Our original magazine ran from 1989 to 2015 and published the likes of Dessa, Richard Siken, Sarah Manguso, Hoa Nguyen, Hadara Bar-Nadav, Howard Zinn, Charles Bukowski, and so many others, and we can’t wait to bring it back.

But we do need your help to do all of this. This Give to the Max Day, we are hoping to raise funds for the magazine and our next big ideas. With your help, we will:

Relaunch Spout Magazine as an online magazine

Host issue launch parties with live music and readings by local contributors in the Twin Cities

Publish our next two books, forthcoming in 2026

Every Autism an Architecture by Tommy Frank, a debut collection of lyric essays about neurodivergence and genderqueerness.

Cicada Wheel by Jesse Kuhn, a debut poetry collection chronicling one’s struggle to live with both integrity and revolutionary ideals in a time of hyper-capitalism.

As a small volunteer-run press, we can’t fund these goals alone. Please consider donating and spreading the word. For those that donate, you’ll get a special thank you gift from us.

For donations of $25 or more, you will receive a mystery book from Spout Press’s backlist.

For donations of $50 or more, you will receive a poster from our Locker Room Talk concert held at Hook & Ladder and a black Spout winter hat.

For donations of $75 or more, you will receive a Locker Room Talk concert poster, a black Spout winter hat, and a mystery book from Spout Press’s backlist.

For donations of $100 or more, you will receive all of the donor gifts (two mystery backlist titles, a Locker Room Talk concert poster, and a black Spout winter hat).

With your support, we can continue publishing more innovative and early career writers and host more exciting events to foster literary community in Minnesota and beyond.
