If you were watching Saturday night’s MLB Future Stars game, you would have seen highly touted prospect JJ Wetherholt lead off for the National League, doubling in his first at-bat and playing the entire game, as the National League won, 4-2. If you were watching last night's MLB All-Star Game, you saw former Mallard Pete Alonso (yes, that's him donning a Madison uni on the book cover) crank a three-run homer for the National League. Alonso and Wetherholt were big parts of the first 25 years of Madison Mallards history, told in Baseball Like It Oughta Be: How a Shoe Salesman’s Madison Mallards and His Renegade Staff Ignited the Summer-Collegiate Baseball Revolution. And just like that home run derbies are again a featured part of the baseball landscape! We saw a dramatic and touching end to the MLB Home Run Derby Monday night, and last night's MLB All-Star Game was decided by a modified home-run derby in dramatic fashion.

But home run derbies are part of the long and rich tradition of baseball, a tradition lovingly shared by Andy Strasberg in Home Runs: Tales of Tonks, Taters, Contests and Derbies. Baseball’s premier storyteller begins with the story of the most famous HR competition—TV’s Home Run Derby—and focuses on memorable derbies and competitions through the years. For those in the Kansas City area: On Saturday, June 28, you can meet Steve Dittmore at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, where he'll be signing Jim Gilliam: The Forgotten Dodger at 12:30 p.m. The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum is a very appropriate venue for a signing: the museum is a guiding light in the emergence of the Negro Leagues being recognized as an important part of baseball history, and Jim Gilliam: The Forgotten Dodger is a fascinating chronicle of that era.
