The Saint Paul Fire Department mourns the loss of Firefighter Timothy Bertz, who passed away yesterday following a serious medical event. Firefighter Bertz, a recent graduate of the Saint Paul Fire Academy and proud military veteran, served with dedication and left a lasting impact. Our deepest condolences to his wife, family, and loved ones.

A public memorial will be held on December 29 at Maranatha Church in Forest Lake. We request privacy for the family during this difficult time.

On December 13, 2025, at approximately 3:12 a.m., the Richfield Police Department received numerous emergency telephone calls from residents of 7601 Knox Avenue South reporting a male was “dragging a dead body” out of an apartment and loading it into a vehicle. A Richfield police officer in the area observed the vehicle departing and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The vehicle failed to stop, and a brief pursuit ensued. The vehicle ultimately stopped at the emergency room entrance of M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina, Minnesota. An adult male driver exited the vehicle. Officers located an unconscious adult female in the back seat suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite lifesaving efforts, the 23-year-old female died from her injuries. The adult male driver was taken into custody.

The incident remains under active investigation.

POLICE OFFICER DEATH: Police Officer Death: Former Moorhead Police Department, MN Police Officer, U.S. Marine, Master Sergeant in the Air National Guard, SWAT sniper, husband, father, friend. Officer Brad Schenck gave 16 years of service to Moorhead PD and even after being diagnosed with malignant brain cancer in 2016, he continued serving his community whenever he could. This week, Officer Schenck, 44, lost his battle with cancer. Described as “the kind of officer you wanted by your side” steady, dependable, deeply committed. Rest Easy Brother. Three arrests. One gun. One stolen plate. Multiple stolen vehicles recovered. All in just six hours, thanks to a joint effort between HCSO, St. Louis Park PD, Minnetonka PD, and Edina PD.

On October 2, 2025, there was a collaborative detail in the City of St. Louis Park. During the detail, a stolen Hyundai Elantra was spotted with masked juveniles inside. State Patrol air tracked the car as it sped through streets, sidewalks, and bike lanes. The car eventually crashed in Edina while trying to flee law enforcement cars. Two juveniles ran from the scene but were quickly caught. Both have lengthy criminal histories and now face multiple felony charges.

Around that same time, MPD requested help locating a burglary suspect. Deputies identified the suspect’s vehicle, which was later seen speeding away. MPD ultimately made the arrest and recovered a firearm.

This collaborative detail proved to be fast, coordinated, and effective. None of it would be possible without the Minnesota Auto Theft Grant, which helps fund overtime for suburban auto theft details.
