As a sculpture artist, Vanessa Freitag incorporates sewing; crochet; embroidery; and weaving into her practice. Building organic shapes that are often imaginary and undefined, Frietag's pieces allude to flora and fauna found in her birthplace of Brazil as well as her home of Mexico.

Preparing for our table for the next 'Diaspora Dinners' and this showed up in our feed.

The importance of food is something many we can understand. Movies and music can be imported, yes. But what of the spices from home? The warmth of your grandmother's kitchen?

Cuisine connects us to our homes, to our history. With our dinners we push it a little further, illustrating how our dishes connects us to each other as much as ourselves.

Art has this ability to take you to completely different world, a new reality. But it also has an intimacy to blur the lines between the world created and the one your own.

Reflecting on my year's reading list, I'm grateful for the many times I envisioned myself in a scene and never felt out of place.
