We’ve got a new project here at the studio that we are excited to share with you. Last month marked the release of Sophie Hiroko’s first single “Ashes”, which is also the first release that was created as part of our new Soft Cult Studio Singles series. We’ve been inviting artists to come spend an afternoon in the studio just focusing on recording one song, all recorded to analog tape. The process is incredibly fun and I’m so happy to see these songs start to make their way out into the world.

I started this project for a variety of reasons:

- Focusing on capturing one song allows us to focus our creative energy more effectively than trying to do something like record a whole album in a weekend. The pressure to maximize productivity is removed, and we can relax and have fun playing and creating.

- Restricting the recording session to just one afternoon lends the process an immediacy that I enjoy. We are not spending weeks or months or years nitpicking and second guessing the art. Instead we focus on creating something great right in this moment.

- I get tired of staring at a computer screen and clicking around on a mouse, so working on an analog tape machine is a refreshing change of pace. It also means we can’t depend on the computer to fix everything for us. This might seem intimidating, but in practice it has made it much easier to be present and connect with the music.

I highly recommend you go check out “Ashes” by .music (link in bio), and keep an eye out for more Soft Cult Studio Singles from folks like .d.k , , and more.

Just got done fixing up this cutie patootie. A couple capacitors had broken leads, the filter capacitors needed to be replaced, and to top it off I installed a grounded power cord and a fresh pilot bulb. Sounds very cool and is surprisingly quiet! The internal construction of this thing stresses me out, with all the components just hanging off the tube sockets rather than having any kind of actual circuit board, but if it works, it works. I’m fond of the “IBSON” nameplate too.

This cute little fella came through our shop recently for a little tuneup - replaced all the 1/4” input jacks and speaker output jacks, and installed a fresh pair of output tubes.

Circuit-wise this amp is pretty similar to a Marshall JCM800, and could easily be modified to match the JCM more closely.

On a little side note, the innards of this amp are unusually well preserved, because it looks like after assembling it they maybe coated the circuit board and all the components in some kind of clear lacquer. Can anyone confirm or deny?

This ended up being an interesting project. A friend brought me this Crate Blue Voodoo 50 amp, claiming that it sounded “dumb” (he was correct) and wondering if I could do anything to help it. Ultimately I decided to modify the amp to be a copy of a Marshall JCM800. The circuit topology was already somewhat similar to a JCM800, but some important changes needed to be made...

- the output tubes were changed to EL34s, and I added an adjustable bias circuit to accommodate them.
- the gain stage preceding the tone stack was changed to be a cathode-follower, as per the original JCM800 schematic.

those were probably the most fundamental changes; beyond that it was mostly a matter of changing resistor, potentiometer and capacitor values to match the JCM800. Overall it was quite an undertaking, but I love taking deep dives into equipment like this.
