Representation in politics means more than winning seats; it means shifting what's possible.

For years, Somali-Americans in Minnesota lacked direct representation in the state's highest legislative chambers, and policies affecting immigrant communities were made without their input.

Omar Fateh changed that.

In January 2021, he became the first Somali-American and first Muslim in the Minnesota State Senate. He championed the North Star Promise Scholarship, making public college tuition-free for lower-income residents. As Chair of the Senate Higher Education Committee, he secured labor protections for rideshare drivers and reclassified fentanyl test strips as harm-reduction tools.

In 2025, his mayoral campaign for Minneapolis energized progressive voters and shifted the city's political conversation, demonstrating that bold policymaking and community loyalty can coexist.

Omar showed that integrity, representation, and transformative policy are not contradictions—they're requirements.

Meet Abdirashid Duale // 2025 Top 10 Somali Excellence honoree, recognized for achievements in Business and Finance.

When traditional financial systems fail, communities find their own solutions.

During the Somali civil war of the early 1990s, families were displaced worldwide with no reliable way to support relatives back home. Global banks abandoned the region, and formal remittance channels collapsed. Millions were cut off from the financial infrastructure they needed to survive.

Abdirashid Duale built the alternative.

From his father's small money-transfer business in Burao, he transformed Dahabshiil into one of the world's largest Africa-founded financial networks, operating across 126 countries and handling billions in annual remittances.

Under his leadership, Dahabshiil expanded beyond remittances into commercial banking, mobile money, fintech, telecommunications, and energy. He has advised the UN, World Bank, and IMF on financial inclusion while funding healthcare, scholarships, and emergency relief across the Horn.

He built more than a business; he built financial infrastructure for millions left behind by the global system.

For decades, Somali athletes and officials were largely invisible on global sporting stages. In a country rebuilding from conflict, pathways to international sport felt distant.

Omar Abdulkadir Artan rewrote the script.

In 2025, he became the first Somali referee selected for a FIFA World Cup, officiating at the U-20 tournament in Chile as one of only three African center referees. He has overseen CAF continental finals and was named CAF Best Male Referee of the Year 2025.

His journey from Mogadishu to the world's most prestigious football stages opened a door that was previously closed, proving that Somali officials belong at the highest levels.

Omar didn't wait for permission. He built credibility through consistency, claimed his place on the world stage, and made history in the process.

Yasmin Abdi is changing that.

She built her foundation at Snapchat, Google, and Meta, becoming the first Black woman engineer at Snapchat. She co-founded Meemo, which was acquired by Coinbase for $95 million in 2021. Now, as CEO of noHack, she provides Silicon Valley-level cybersecurity to startups and nonprofits that typically can't afford such protection.

She received the 2024 Innovation of the Year Award at the Global Somali Awards for consistently building at the intersection of access and excellence.
