I've been watching NFL games for more than 60 years. What Chicago Bears cornerback Tyrique Stevenson did Sunday at Washington was the most irresponsible and disrespectful behavior I've ever seen in a game. Stevenson is No. 29 at the bottom of the photo. He's posing and trash-talking some Commanders fans while the last play of the game is underway.
Raise your hand if you've ever seen anything like this in an NFL game!!!! By the time Stevenson realizes the play has started, he's too late getting into coverage to help his teammates stop a Hail Mary pass that was deflected and landed in the arms of Commanders WR Noah Brown for a game-winning touchdown as time expired in the fourth quarter.
Stevenson apologized on social media for his lack of 'focus', but for me, a lifelong Bears fan and Chicago native, his apology is NOT accepted!!! He could have kept that weak a-- attempt for forgiveness! Stevenson's actions contributed to a painful Bears' loss, a game the Bears should have won.
If I was Bears coach Matt Eberflus, here's what I would do: First, I would make Stevenson address the entire team before Monday's team meeting or film session. Then, I would fine him and sit him on the bench for the next 3 or 4 games WITHOUT PAY! It might sound harsh, and I'm sure the NFL Players' Union would protest, but the only way to get inside a player's head these days is to mess with their money and not let them play. Stevenson needs to know that what he did was downright stupid and helped cost the Bears a win!
