Rather than relying on overdubs and post-production layering, Porter and his band–cellist and vocalist Mai Bloomfield, vocalist Carmen Nickerson, and multi-instrumentalist Ryan Pearl–performed together as a cohesive unit while being captured through the cutting-edge IDL 7.0.4 microphone array from Immersive Design Labs. The IDL array contains 11 matched IDL-3203 microphones.

W***y Porter stopped by 50 Church Street Studios at Harvard — guitar in hand, dog on a leash, and good vibes all around.

His album, Humans in a Room—was a landmark project recorded entirely “live-to-immersive” using the IDL 7.0.4 Immersive Recording Array and IDL-3103 and IDL-3203 microphones from Immersive Design Labs (IDL).

While the IDL-3103 Pressure Microphone is optimized for immersive recording using the Immersive Microphone Mounting Array, it is also a fantastic choice for standalone mono recordings. Guitars, amps, vocals, keyboards and percussion are pristinely captured in mono or stereo applications.

In the studio with "Quarters" guitarist and producer Jasper Harris, we see a single IDL-3103 on a vintage upright piano. This focused approach allows the recording to cut through a dense mix.

Recorded live at EastWest Studios (Los Angeles) and Ocean Way Nashville, every performance was captured in real time and mixed directly for Dolby Atmos®—no overdubs, no object trickery. The result: an album that surrounds listeners with honesty, emotion, and breathtaking spatial realism.
