At a packed meeting on Sep. 15, Minneapolis Public Schools unveiled three proposals to “right size” the school district in the face of low enrollment. Journalists like Becky Z. Dernbach had to parse through euphemistic language in a dense report to find the proposals include plans to close between 14 and 16 schools in the district.

Following St. Paul’s closing of the homeless encampment at Pig’s Eye Park, most of the residents moved on to other encampments. Very few people transitioned to indoor shelter. Kat Hunter of Rising Waters Mutual Aid argues that encampment residents would be better off if the city provided basic services rather than conducting more sweeps.

The Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association spays and neuters cats and dogs live in front of fairgoers every day of the Great Minnesota Get Together. 48 spay and neuter operations take place over the course of the fair, and cats and dogs from local animal rescues are available for adoption from their respective locations after the fair is over.

Post Modern Times is reopening as the Modern Times Cafe on Wednesday, Aug. 26. While prices are returning to their menu, they will continue giving away free food on a limited basis.
