Jason Garcia, commissioner for the Minneapolis Park Board, introduced a resolution to decommission the Minnehaha Off-Leash Dog Park no later than the end 2026. Why? The land is culturally significant to the Dakota people; victims of a Dakotra concentration camp are believed to be buried nearby. Susan Du of has reported how Native American residents have experienced dogs interrupting their ceremonies.

🙋‍♀️ Is the whole park closing?
No, Garcia said the park will still be open to people and their leashed, well-behaved dogs.

🙋‍♀️ Will the park board move the dog park elsewhere?
Garcia’s resolution directs staff to find a different location, but they acknowledge the uniqueness of the park.

“We’re not sure that there is a comparable site anywhere in the city of Minneapolis,” Garcia told City Cast Twin Cities. Hear more on today’s episode, wherever you get your podcasts. 🎧
