You Are Not Behind
There is a quiet ache that many of us carry and never say out loud, and it usually shows up late at night or in the middle of someone else's good news. It is the feeling that everyone around you has already arrived somewhere you are still trying to reach, and that the timeline you imagined for your life slipped away when you were not looking. I want to sit with you in that feeling for a moment instead of rushing past it, because it deserves an honest answer, and the honest answer is this. You are not behind. You were simply never on the schedule you have been punishing yourself for missing.
We inherited the idea that life is a straight line with markers you are supposed to hit by a certain age. When we do not hit them on cue, we assume something has gone wrong with us. But the straight line was always a fiction. Real lives bend. They pause for the people who need us, they slow down through the seasons that ask more of us than we thought we had, and they double back to pick up the pieces left behind the first time. The years you spent surviving, caregiving, recovering, or simply figuring out who you were becoming were not detours off your path. They were your path, and they were doing something in you that the shortcut could never have done.
So consider setting down the measuring stick you have been holding against your own life, because it was never built to tell the truth about you. What looks like lost time is often the very ground on which your next season will stand. The thing you fear you started too late may turn out to be the thing you were finally ready for. You have not missed your moment, and you are not running out of time. You are exactly where a life that is still unfolding is supposed to be, which is to say, still unfolding. Take heart and keep going. The most meaningful chapters of your story are not the ones behind you, and they are worth every ounce of the showing up that is still ahead.
