Minot Daily News Sports Editor Ryan Holmgren achieved a first for the Daily News when he won not one, but two national awards at the Associated Press Sports Editors annual journalism contest last week.

Holmgren, who covers Minot State University athletics, was named one of the nation's top 10 beat writers in 2014 in the under-30,000 circulation category. The 23-year-old also received an APSE top-10 in breaking news for his story on former MSU football coach Todd Hoffner's decision to be reinstated at Minnesota State-Mankato.

Minot State seniors Katie Hardy and Morgan Klose have spent the past 14 years playing basketball together. They both grew up in Fairview, N.D., went to high school just across the border in Fairview, Mont. — where they won a Class C state championship in 2010 — and continued their hoops careers with the Beavers. On Saturday, they'll play their final home game together.
