Our very mild January temperatures have truly been "forty"-fied in Michiana. The past 15 days have been the warmest start to any calendar year on record at South Bend, and include nine days of temperatures at or above 40 degrees! Sadly, we've averaged over 80% cloud cover through that time, keeping nighttime temps elevated but our spirits low. Today's MLK Jr holiday will be cloudy, windy and mild, with widespread rain showers and a high in the mid 40s. More murky mildness is expected through next weekend, with above normal temperatures and lots of cloud cover. Rain/snow is likely on Thursday as another weather disturbance moves through, but no major winter storms or arctic air are expected. The un-"ski"-sonably warm start to 2023 continues!

We've had a dramatic Christmas "freeze" in Michiana this year! Friday's "high" temperature of 10 degrees F was the 2nd coldest ever recorded for this date, and strong westerly winds produced dangerous wind chill values lower than -30 degrees F. The "brr"-utal weather will continue through the Christmas weekend, with highs in the low teens and slowly diminishing winds. Additional snowfall should be confined to extreme northern Indiana and southwest Michigan, but blowing and driftings now will continue to make travel difficult for all of us. Plan carefully to keep your family and pets safe and warm, especially if electric power is lost.
Otherwise, a fairly quick warm-up is expected by the middle of next week, so stay hopeful and enjoy this holiday season indoors!

It's looking like a "white-knuckle" Christmas in Michiana this year! Wednesday was the last of the quiet days leading up to a major winter storm beginning late Thursday and lasting into early Saturday. Our whole area is under a winter storm warning through that time, and the counties of Berrien and Cass in Michigan, and LaPorte and St. Joseph in Indiana are under a rare blizzard warning as well! Temperatures will drop quickly late Thursday with a possible flash freeze overnight. System snow will begin then and continue through much of Friday, whipped by 45-55 mph westerly winds. Travel will be very difficult if not impossible most of Friday.
We'll all experience bitter cold temperatures, with highs in the single digits and dangerous wind chill values -20 to -30 deg F. Additional lake effect snow is expected late Friday and Saturday in southwest Michigan and extreme northern Indiana. Combined snow totals range from 6"-12" in southwest Michigan/northern Indiana to lesser 4"-8" amounts further south.
Plan carefully to keep your family and pets safe and warm, especially if electric power is lost. Avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.
Otherwise, a fairly quick warm-up is expected by the middle of next week, so stay hopeful and enjoy this holiday season indoors!

After 11 straight days of mild and murky December weather, it's time to "chill out and whiten up" as Christmas approaches in Michiana! Friday was the first day of below normal temperatures in nearly two weeks, and many also saw varying amounts of lake-effect snow. The cold, breezy, snowy conditions continue through the weekend, with highs only in the upper 20s both days. Temps will trend further downward throughout next week, with a possible arctic outbreak behind a potent winter storm bringing snow chances and highs only in the teens for Christmas weekend. We'll finally be feeling the "brr" in December!

Considering our recent early taste of winter, Thursday was a day to be Thank-"fall" for in MIchiana. It was the second straight day of above normal temperatures (after 11 straight below normal!), and the fourth consecutive snowless day (after 30.2" so far this month). After some overnight light rain, skies should become mostly sunny with a high in the upper 40s for Black Friday, and a high in the low to mid 50s for Saturday. Rain returns on Sunday, with a high in the mid to upper 40s. Wintry weather makes a comeback late Wednesday and Thursday, as Decem-"brr" begins!

Strong, gusty winds caused an incredi-"blow" Saturday in Michiana. Wind gusts topped 50 mph in many locations, and very mild air continued to grace our area with highs in the upper 60s. Sunday will be cooler and calmer, with mostly sunny skies and a high in the low 60s. Above normal temperatures will continue well into next week, although it looks quite chilly (and maybe snowy!) by the weekend. Until then, "Indiana Summer" rolls on!

It's been a "frost"-rating fall weekend in Michiana! Low temperatures in the 30s produced scattered frost around the region both Saturday and Sunday mornings. Afternoon highs only in the mid 50s on Friday and Saturday were the coldest since May 6 (155 days ago)! Abundant sunshine and warm winds will produce highs in the mid 60s on Sunday and Monday. Mid 70s are expected for highs on Tuesday before a cold front brings rain chances for Wednesday, and much cooler temperatures thereafter. Looks like some beauti-"fall" weather ahead!

Although there were a few peeks of autumn sunshine, Saturday was mostly "cool"-oudy in Michiana. The high of 72 was the "warmest" in the past three days, and maybe the warmest for the next 7 seven! Showers are likely, t-storms possible today with a high in the mid 60s. Monday and Tuesday will be windy with scattered showers and very cool highs in the lower 60s and upper 50s. Wednesday thru Saturday will see plenty of sunshine with high temperatures slowly warming from 60 to the low 70s. Looks like Septem-"brr" weather will continue for a while!

Strong thunderstorms have developed across the MIchiana area tonight ahead of a slow-moving weather disturbance to our west. A couple of these storms have produced 60 mph wind gutsts: one near Three Rivers, MI and one near North Manchester, IN. The Michigan storms have produced rainfall in excess of 2 inches, causing a flash flood warning for central St. Joseph county in Michigan until 12:30 AM EDT. The Indiana storm produced a doppler-indicated tornado, which has since moved into Whitely county and weakened. The rest of our area continues to see scattered showers and thunderstorms, producing torrential rains, strong winds and frequent lightning. Stay tuned to WSBT for the latest updates on this evolving storm situation. WSBT22 Meteorologist Bob Werner

Whether you're celebrating or not, we are all having a weekend "wetting" in Michiana. While the timing is not ideal, the rainfall is welcome. Heading into Saturday, we'd received only 0.21" of rain since August 4th, less than 10% of normal! Scattered showers and t-storms will persist through Sunday, with clouds and rain keeping high temperatures only in the mid-70s. Drier weather returns for the work week, with abundant sunshine and warm temperatures Monday-Thursday. Steamy air and rain chances increase toward next weekend. "Steams" like summer's not over yet!
