More and more schools are having their students wear uniforms 🏫. In 2017-2018, a whopping 20% of *public* schools required uniforms 👔 – up 3% from the previous decade. Uniforms are becoming so common that even large retailers such as Walmart, Target, and Amazon now sell them.

Proponents of school uniforms say they:
✔️Keep students focused on their studies
✔️ Create a “level playing field” among students (so that kids’ access to wealth/resources is less obvious)
✔️ Reduce peer pressure/bullying
✔️ Enhance school pride/unity
✔️ Make parents’ lives easier (no arguing about what kids can/should wear in the morning!)

Opponents of school uniforms say they:
✔️ Restrict students’ freedom of expression
✔️ Promote conformity over individuality
✔️ Do not eliminate socio-economic divisions
✔️ Undermine the concept of “free” education (in public schools) by imposing an extra expense on families
✔️ Are not as beneficial for students or their families as many proponents claim

Which got us thinking …

❓ In your opinion, do the benefits of school uniforms outweigh the costs? Do you wish you – or your kid(s) – had to wear a uniform to school?

❓ If you’re in favor of school uniforms, should they be “gendered” (e.g., girls in skirts, boys in pants) … or should all kids wear the same thing?
