The Pharr Community Theater is seeking 12 performers for the Spanish language version of the 17th century masterpiece, "The Knight From Olmedo" by Lope De Vega, to be directed locally by Pedro Garcia.
Written around 1620, and based on a folk tale, "El Caballero de Olmedo" tells of a romance between Don Alonso, a brave young knight from the town of Olmedo, and a well-brought-up young woman named Doña Inés, who lives in Medina. Because she is also being courted by one Don Rodrigo, Inés initially tries to keep her relationship with Alonso secret, but what with the jealous Rodrigo's snooping, her happiness is not in the cards.
Twelve roles are available for 5 women and 7 men ranging in ages 17-70. A Fencing instructor/coach is also needed. Cold reading auditions will be open to anyone who has ever wanted to try acting and held on May 20 & May 21, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at the Pharr Memorial Library, 121 E. Cherokee St.
For more information please call 956-655-9308 or 956-648-2488.
Lope De Vega pictured here wrote nearly 1300 plays, poems and sonnets combined. Like Spielberg is in today's cinema, so was Lope in Spain's 17th century theater, synonymous to coolness.
