Viral ‘6-7’ Tops 2025 List Of Overused Words And Phrases

Respondents to an annual Michigan college survey of overused and misused words and phrases say ” 6-7 ” is “cooked” and should come to a massive full-stop heading into the new year.

Those are among the top 10 words on the 50th annual “Banished Words List,” released Thursday by Lake Superior State University. The tongue-in-cheek roundup of overused slang started in 1976 as a New Year’s Eve party idea, and is affectionately called the list of “Queen’s English for Mis-use, Over-use and General Uselessness.”

Around 1,400 submissions came from all 50 states and a number of countries outside the U.S., including Uzbekistan, Brazil and Japan, according to Lake Superior State.

Also in the top 10 are “demure,” “incentivize,” “perfect,” “gift/gifted,” “my bad” and “reach out.” “My bad” and “reach out” also made the list decades ago — in 1998 and 1994, respectively.

Police Remind Residents Not To Shoot Guns On New Year’s

The Edinburg Police Department is reminding residents not to fire guns in the air on New Year’s Eve. The police department issued a warning on social media on Monday, noting that celebratory gunfire is illegal.

Police also warned that shooting bullets in the air can have deadly consequences once they come down. Fireworks are also prohibited within the city limits.

Murder Warrant Issued As Search Continues For Suspect In Eddy Betancourt Killing

Authorities in McAllen have issued a murder warrant for 60‑year‑old Reynaldo Mata‑Rios, who is accused in the shooting death of Eddy Betancourt, a well‑known Mission businessman and vice chair of the Hidalgo County Appraisal District Board.

Police say Mata‑Rios, described as 6 feet tall, about 195 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes, is currently being sought. His last known residence is in Pharr. Investigators noted that Mata‑Rios previously indicated he would surrender but has not done so.

Betancourt, 61, was found dead Saturday afternoon. Community members remember him as a respected figure in local business and public service.

Anyone with information is urged to contact McAllen police at 956‑681‑2000, or provide anonymous tips through McAllen Crime Stoppers at 956‑687‑TIPS (8477).

Two Dead After Shooting In Starr County:

The Starr County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deadly weekend shooting near Garciaville.

Officers were called to a location on Loma Blanc Lane around 10 p.m. on Saturday. Two men were pronounced dead at the scene, while another was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The Texas Rangers are assisting the sheriff’s office in the shooting investigation.

Edinburg Leaders Mourn Death Of David Chavana

A South Texas man known for his dedication to running has died. The death of David Chavana was announced on Saturday. The 73-year-old worked for the Edinburg school district and helped start the annual David Chavana All-America City 10K race.

Edinburg Mayor Omar Ochoa called Chavana the heart of the annual race, saying his legacy of health, service and community spirit would continue to inspire the community.

Edinburg North High School also released a statement calling Chavana an icon whose life and leadership touched generations of students, staff and community members.

Sea Turtle Inc. Accepting Christmas Tree Donations:

South Texas residents looking for a way to recycle their live Christmas trees might want to consider donating them to Sea Turtle, Incorporated.

The nonprofit is accepting trees to help build up dunes around its hatchling corral. The trees trap and hold sand, helping to keep hatchlings safe as they grow.

Trees can be dropped off through January 4th at the organization’s building on South Padre Island.

Mission Businessman Eddy Bettancourt Dies In Shooting In McAllen:

Hidalgo County leaders are mourning the death of Mission businessman Eddy Betancourt. The 61-year-old was found dead on Saturday afternoon in McAllen.

Investigators say Betancourt died from a gunshot wound, and his death is being investigated by local, state and federal agencies.

Betancourt was the vice chairman of the Hidalgo County Appraisal District Board of Directors and was a member of the Texas Facilities Commission.

Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez expressed condolences to Betancourt’s family, saying in a statement that he was a tireless advocate for the community and will be remembered with great respect and gratitude.
