We are officially in the middle of a January heat wave.

Okay, maybe "heat wave" is a stretch, but with temperatures hitting 44°F yesterday and nothing but blue skies over the valley, it certainly feels like a break from the deep freeze. As you can see in the timelapse, the sun owned the sky from sunrise to sunset.

It is the kind of mid-week weather that begs for a little "play" time.

If you are looking for an excuse to get out tonight, the Lake Missoula Old Time group is hosting their monthly slow jam at the Longstaff House starting at 6 p.m.. Or, if you prefer a quieter evening, swing by Shakespeare & Co. at 7 p.m. for an author event with Brad Bigelow.

Enjoy the sunshine while it lasts—we will be here with a good book when the clouds roll back in.

Yesterday's timelapse captures the clouds rolling heavy over the mountains, trading shifts with the sun throughout the day. You can see the light breaking through in patches, illuminating the valley floor against that moody gray sky.

But regardless of the clouds, it is a great week to be outside.

The temperatures are mild and the air is fresh—perfect conditions for shaking off the winter cabin fever. Whether you are heading up for some mid-week turns or just taking a walk along the river, make sure you take advantage of this break in the deep freeze.

And when you are ready to come back indoors, we have plenty of stories to keep you entertained.

A new week is underway in the valley.

Yesterday's timelapse captures a calm Sunday to close out the weekend, but the pace is picking up in town this week. If you are looking to get out of the house, here is a look at what is happening in Missoula:

Friday: YeEDM brings a Country/Electronic takeover to the Top Hat late night.

Saturday: Comedian Nate Bargatze takes the stage at the Adams Center for his "Big Dumb Eyes" tour.

All Weekend: The Flying Mules Hockey Festival will be taking over the Glacier Ice Rink.

The weekend has officially arrived.

Yesterday’s timelapse shows the clouds hanging over the valley, but you can spot those brief moments where the sun broke through and lit up the snow on the hills. It looks like typical January weather—perfect for balancing outdoor time with some indoor events.

Missoula has plenty going on this weekend to keep you busy.

The Lady Griz are back at the Adams Center tomorrow to take on Eastern Washington, and the Winter Markets will be in full swing on Saturday morning if you need to restock on local goods. Whether you are heading to the game or just grabbing coffee and browsing the stalls, we hope you have a great couple of days.

From all of us at Mountain Press, enjoy the weekend.

Finding the bright spots.

Even with winter storms moving through the area, yesterday offered some incredible moments of light. As you can see in the timelapse, the sun managed to break through the cloud cover around mid-morning, illuminating the snow on the mountains and casting racing shadows across the valley floor.

It is a good reminder that even in the depth of January, there is always beauty to be found if you look for it.

If you need a little more brightness to get you through the rest of the week, we have just the thing. A colorful guidebook to Montana’s wildflowers or a collection of local photography is a great way to bring some of that light indoors.

Winter is reminding us that this time of year belongs to it.

While yesterday's timelapse shows a relatively calm day in the valley, conditions have shifted quickly this morning. A storm is currently rolling through the area, bringing slick roads and reduced visibility.

If you have to be behind the wheel today, please take it slow and give yourself plenty of extra braking room.

For those who can stay off the roads, this is the perfect excuse to stay inside. There is no better way to wait out a winter storm than with a good story. Mountain Press Publishing has a full catalog of books on local history and geology to keep you company while the weather does its work outside.

Stay safe out there, Missoula.

A valley full of history.

As you watch the sunrise over Missoula in this timelapse, it is easy to forget how much this landscape has changed over time. From the glacial waters of Lake Missoula that once filled this entire basin to the bustling trade hub it became, every corner of this valley has a story to tell.

We might be biased, but we think the history of the Northern Rockies is just as dramatic as the scenery.

If you have ever looked out at these mountains and wondered about the people who came before us, come visit us. Mountain Press Publishing specializes in the history of the West, and we love helping our neighbors discover the past right under their feet.

Another day of rain means another good reason to stay inside.

The gray skies and wet weather captured in yesterday’s timelapse are a sign of the January thaw. While it might not be the best conditions for outdoor adventures, it is the perfect atmosphere for catching up on your reading list.

If you are looking for a new book to wait out the storm, we can help. Mountain Press Publishing has a wide selection of titles on geology, nature, and history that bring the outdoors to you—without the rain.
