Castle Valley Comments: For 18 years, our little community was favored with professional fireworks that rivaled what you might see in a major city or even Times Square.
At about 7 p.m. on New Year’s eve Pat was hearing noises outside like something was hitting the end of the house. She thought I was playing tricks on her. After proclaiming my innocence, I went out to investigate and saw rather large fireworks exploding high in the sky.

High Desert Hoofbeats: Cashiers and visitors nervously giggled that yeah, it seemed funny to not be cold, but they couldn’t complain about how marvelous it felt outside.
I resisted the urge on Christmas Eve to do something I’d never done before on that occasion. And later on New Year’s Day I resisted the urge again, even though the opportunity crossed my mind a number of times. I resisted the urge to spray weeds.

Opinion: With the exception of Melodie McCandless, Grand County commissioners' travel budget requests and expenditures tell a polar opposite story.
With the exception of Melodie McCandless, their travel budget requests and expenditures tell a polar opposite story. The Times-Independent is your source for community news, business, local ads and events in Moab, San Juan County and the Four Corners region of southeast Utah. We have served the communities of southeastern Utah since 1896.
The company is the successor to the Grand Valley Times, which started in 1896, and the Moab Independent, which merged in 1919 under the direction of the Taylor family.
The following is an excerpt from A History of Grand County by Richard A. Firmage regarding the newspaper...
“With the coming of the newspaper to the county in 1896, local events were reported much more frequently and, it is hoped, more accurately; however, omissions, errors, and reporter's biases that have been found in some of the reports serve to caution the later reader that all may not have been exactly as it was described in print. Nonetheless, the Grand Valley Times (later The Times-Independent) represents in many cases the major source of early county history and has been of tremendous importance to the town of Moab and the regional community since its founding in 1896 by a transplanted Coloradan, Justus N. Corbin.
“Corbin had arrived in Moab only three weeks before he published the inaugural issue of the Grand Valley Times on May 30, 1896. An enterprising and energetic man, he also was one of two practicing attorneys in Moab prior to the turn of the century, later serving as county attorney, and he was instrumental in bringing telephone service to Moab, among his many other community services. His greatest contribution, however, was the newspaper. Originally a small four-page paper published weekly, the newspaper expanded in length to eight pages within a year and soon increased its page size as well. It has continued uninterrupted weekly publication for almost a century.”
The newspaper is operated by the Taylor family to this day, with Zane Taylor proudly carrying on as the publisher of our weekly issues. We publish every Thursday morning as the newspaper of record for Grand County.
