The recent 56th annual Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, UT, gave way to thousands of Jeep enthusiasts and all kinds of 4x4 hardware and designs. From old wartime Willys flat fenders to Jeep’s latest concept vehicles, there was a wide variety of customized rigs for everyone to admire. Tons of trails hosted day-long treks for extreme rock-crawling endeavours for those brave enough to test their vehicle’s off-road mettle.

The Roaming Rally returned for 2022 after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19.

Held in Eastern Ontario from May 26 - 29 and hosted by graveltravel.ca, the ADV/4x4 overlanding event consisted of running approximately 300 km ( 186 mi) per day while encountering intense water crossings, rocky conditions not to mention the aftermath of a storm of a century. Our 4x4 skills were put to the test and it was an enlightening experience I won’t soon forget.

Quality off-Road comfort from Canadian Manufacturer SkyeTent.

The new BaseCamp4 hard shell tent made us do a double-take right from the name. Multiday overland trips require setting up multiple camps through the journey and for us, four is the magic number. Fewer than four days away doesn’t feel long enough to relax and more than four means we must take serious time off.

A common wheeling mistake is following too closely to another vehicle. The terrain immediately behind the vehicle in front of you is in a blind spot. You also won’t see obstacles or be able to formulate a plan.

What are the Benefits of an Off-Road Trailer?

There are a number of ways to be comfortable while camping off-grid including using a tent, an RTT, or modifying a 4x4 with sleeping accommodations, and all are viable and popular options. However, we like to think that an off-road trailer is an extension of a 4x4, which not only provides a great place to sleep, but it’s where you can store additional gear, be provided with optimal protection from the elements, and prolong trips. Other advantages include:

- Using it as a comfortable home base.
- More designated space for gear, thus reducing the time to prep for trips, (especially if your trailer is always loaded and ready to go at a moment’s notice).
- Some are rigged with various systems and/or appliances and can integrate larger power systems for chargers, tools, and more.
- Increased living space
- Reduced weight and increase space in your 4x4/tow vehicle

Every recovery is unique and potentially risky. If you’re the ‘point person’ when freeing a stuck vehicle, you are responsible for ensuring the safety of other members in your group while making efforts to minimize damage to the vehicle and trail in the process. Tread lightly. Be thoughtful.
When pulling out your gear before a recovery here are some tips to remember:

- Only use bow shackles on rated recovery points and never use them to connect other kinetic ropes or straps.
- Always know the rating system on shackles, sn**ch blocks, ropes and recovery points and adhere to the manufacturer’s guidelines.
- Avoid rigging a hard shackle on the end of a kinetic rope or strap as it could potentially create a dangerous projectile if it snaps.
