Police in Fargo, North Dakota, say one of their own was killed in a shooting Friday, an incident that also critically injured two other officers and injured two civilians.

The Fargo Police Department said in a press conference Saturday that it did not have a motive for the shooting. The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Mohamad Barakat, was shooting in rapid succession, although it is unclear if it was a semi-automatic weapon or an automatic weapon, authorities said.

The Fargo Police Department released the names of the officers involved in the incident on Saturday

Officer Jake Wallin, who joined the force in April, was fatally shot in the incident. Wallin was 23.

Officers Andrew Dotas and Tyler Hawes sustained gunshot wounds and are currently in critical stable conditions with serious injuries at local hospitals.

Officer Zachary Robinson shot and killed the suspect, according to the department. Robinson has been placed on paid administrative leave while the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation (NDBCI) conducts an investigation into the use of force, per The Fargo Police Department's standard operating procedure.

Fargo Police Chief Dave Zibolski said that the events of the past 24 hours were the most difficult in the department's 150-year history.

"This was a heinous and unthinkable act of aggression against our officers and the entire metro community. As we all try to comprehend what has transpired and mourn the impact on our team and the entire community, we are bracing for extremely difficult days ahead. We know that we are joined by our metro community in this process and that brings comfort to all of us," Zibolski said in a statement.

"Our hearts are heavy, but I can assure you that we never take your support for granted; we can profoundly feel the fabric of this community in your actions, words of encouragement and acts of kindness. Together, we are and will remain the guardians of our Fargo community," he added.

A 25-year-old female Fargo resident was also shot during the critical incident, police said. She was transported from the scene to a local healthcare facility with serious injuries.

Ella French didn’t have to die. That is neither misplaced anger nor wishful thinking, it is the plain, tragic truth: Ella French didn’t have to die.

The 29-year-old Chicago Police officer and two other officers pulled over a car for expired license plates in the West Englewood neighborhood Saturday night. After the driver, Eric Morgan, pulled to the side of the road, his brother Emonte opened fire on French and another officer, killing her and badly injuring him.

This didn’t have to happen.

Emonte Morgan, the alleged gunman, was charged with felony theft and misdemeanor battery in 2019 after he arranged to purchase an iPhone but ran off with it instead. When the victim chased and confronted Morgan, Morgan punched him repeatedly until several bystanders were able to subdue him.

In exchange for a guilty plea, prosecutors dropped the felony theft charge against Morgan, and he was sentenced to two years’ probation. In May, prosecutors moved to revoke that probation because of an unspecified violation, but on Saturday Morgan was still on the street and able to shoot Ella French to death.

She didn’t have to die, but she did—in part because the Cook County justice system refused to enforce the law and punish a probation violation. Had it done do, Emonte Morgan would not have been on the street on Saturday.

The tragic deaths of two Queensland Police Service officers is a reminder of the sacrifices our police make each and every day to keep our communities safe. For our police, even the most routine and mundane of tasks can turn deadly, and that takes a toll on even the strongest of people.
In the last 24 hours, l've seen and heard some of the worst elements of our society downplay their sacrifice, or make disparaging comments, about our police. To that small minority of people who disrespect our hardworking police, know that your sentiments are not shared by me, the Sunshine Coast community, or by the overwhelming majority of Queenslanders who, each and every day, are appreciative of those who don the blue uniform and sacrifice to keep us all safe.
Serving as a police officer isn't just a job, it's a commitment to put the safety of others first. Too often that means our police deal with the worst in our society and yesterday it resulted in the death of two young Queensland police officers.
Our thoughts are with all those impacted by this terrible incident, especially the family, friends and colleagues of Constables Rachel McCrow and Matthew Arnold. May their service never be forgotten.

A U.S. Air Force RQ-4B Global Hawk assigned to the 348th Reconnaissance Squadron at Grand Forks Air Force Base was lost during a long-range overseas ferry mission after suffering a sudden in-flight engine failure. *
Investigators later determined that a cracked accessory gearbox oil line - caused by high-cycle metal fatigue - led to rapid oil loss and a complete engine shutdown during flight.
With limited recovery options available, the mission crew directed the aircraft away from populated areas and safely ditched it into the ocean near Naval Station Rota, Spain. No injuries or damage on the ground were reported.
The official investigation also noted that the approved mission routing provided insufficient emergency divert airfields for the unmanned aircraft, reducing the crew's available options during the emergency.
The RQ-4B Global Hawk and its reconnaissance payload, valued at nearly $99 million, were destroyed in the incident.
The mishap highlighted how a relatively small mechanical failure can quickly escalate into the loss of a high-value strategic surveillance aircraft during long-duration operations.

Mamma I'm safe, I love you," the 31-year-old Marine Corps staff sergeant wrote as he worked to keep some semblance of order while thousands of desperate Afghans tried to get on the last few evacuation flights.
Taylor, as he was called by his family, was among the last
13 U.S. troops killed in Afghanistan. An Islamic State bomber blew himself up at an airport gate during the chaotic mission to evacuate Americans and at-risk Afghans before a complete U.S. military withdrawal.
Taylor, 31, ultimately succumbed to his injuries. He was the oldest of the 13 U.S. service members killed by a su***de bomber at Hamid Karzai International Airport on Aug. 26, 2021, during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. The blast also killed at least 170 Afghan civilians and injured more than 150 others. Taylor, who served for 11 years, would have made the same sacrifice again if it meant saving his men, Darin told Fox News.
"He's got the heart of a lion, and he really is fiercely protective," Darin said.

A U.S. Air Force Lockheed C-141 Starlifter suffered catastrophic structural damage during a routine ground refueling operation after dangerous pressure rapidly accumulated inside the aircraft's wing fuel tanks. +
What began as a standard servicing procedure quickly escalated when the internal tank pressure exceeded the limits the aircraft's wing structure was designed to handle.
Ground crews suddenly noticed sections of the wing skin warping and buckling under the extreme stress, forcing an immediate halt to operations. Although the incident did not trigger a fire or violent explosion, the damage was so severe that the aircraft was ultimately removed from service.
The massive C-141 relied on integrated fuel cells housed inside the wings, requiring highly controlled fuel flow, venting, and pressure management during every refueling cycle. Even a small error in the sequence or monitoring process could place enormous strain on the aging airframe.
Following the incident, investigators determined that procedural mistakes and insufficient pressure monitoring contributed heavily to the failure. The event became another powerful reminder throughout military aviation that ground operations can be just as dangerous as flight itself, especially when handling large aircraft with complex fuel systems.
