TRAFFIC: From ALEA concerning I-65 at Alabaster/Calera

**The Interstate 65 southbound traffic is being diverted at mile marker 238**

A multi-vehicle crash involving a commercial vehicle that occurred at approximately 11:47 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, has caused both a lane and road closure. All lanes of Interstate 65 southbound near the 238 mile marker in Shelby County are currently blocked and will remain so for an undetermined amount of time. A bridge on Shelby County 87, which crosses over Interstate 65 near the 234 mile marker in Shelby County, is currently blocked and will remain so for an undetermined amount of time.

Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division are on the scene investigating and will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates accordingly.

August 27–28 brings a dramatic lunar eclipse to the night sky, but how much you see will depend on where you are in North America.

During the event, Earth’s shadow will move across the Moon, covering as much as 96.2% of its surface at maximum eclipse. That will leave only a small bright portion visible while much of the Moon takes on a deep copper-red color.

The best views will depend on your location.

Parts of the East Coast and Midwest are expected to have the opportunity to follow the eclipse through its major stages, while observers farther west may see only the earlier phases before moonset.

For viewers in central parts of North America, the timing could allow them to catch the most dramatic part of the eclipse.

The good news is that lunar eclipses are completely safe to watch with your naked eyes. Unlike a solar eclipse, you don’t need special protective glasses.

Binoculars or a telescope can make the Moon’s craters and changing colors even more impressive, but they’re not necessary.

So check your local moonrise and moonset times, watch the weather, and find a spot with a clear view of the sky.

North Alabama man’s body recovered from water in Wetumpka’s Corn Creek Park
First responders spent hours Friday afternoon and into the evening unsuccessfully searching for a missing swimmer.

ELMORE COUNTY, Ala. (WSFA) - The body of a missing swimmer has been recovered in Wetumpka’s Corn Creek Park, the Wetumpka Police Department is confirming.

Searchers pulled the body of Qadir Lyle, 18, of Decatur, from the water around 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

was found after hours of searching Friday afternoon, according to the Wetumpka Police Department.

First responders were called to the scene around 4:15 p.m. Friday after reports that a swimmer had gone under the water and never resurfaced.

Corn Creek Park is located off the Coosa River near the downtown Wetumpka area and is a popular area for swimming and canoeing.

Search and rescue operations were called off Friday night due to nightfall and inclement weather conditions in the area, with plans to resume at 8 a.m. Saturday.

Lyle’s body was recovered a little under three hours later.

SEARCH TO RESUME AT

The search for a missing 18-year-old male is expected to resume at 8:00 a.m. Saturday, August 22, at Corn Creek Park in Elmore County.

Corn Creek Park is located along the Coosa River just north of downtown Wetumpka, near the Wallsboro community.

Wetumpka Police received a call around 4:15 p.m. Friday reporting that a person had gone beneath the water at Corn Creek Park and had not resurfaced.

Emergency crews responded and began a search-and-rescue operation Friday afternoon Emergency crews were eventually forced to suspend the search Friday evening due to diminishing daylight and lightning in the area.

The operation has since transitioned from a search-and-rescue mission to a recovery effort. Crews are scheduled to return to the area at 8:00 a.m. Saturday to continue searching.

Multiple agencies have been involved in the response, including the Wetumpka Police Department, Wetumpka Fire Department, ALEA Aviation, ALEA Marine Police and Elmore County EMA.

Coosa River Adventures has also suspended its kayaking services for Saturday because of the ongoing search and recovery operation, helping reduce activity and congestion in the area while emergency crews continue their work.
