Three generations of one Modesto family are gone after a heartbreaking tragedy on Monterey Avenue.

According to Modesto police and local reports, officers responded shortly after 9:20 a.m. on Thursday, May 28, 2026, to the 1600 block of Monterey Avenue, near Orville Wright Elementary School, after a reported disturbance.

Inside the home, police found 23-year-old Fabiola Gonzalez-Nunez, her mother, 54-year-old Maria Sylvia Nunez-Villalobos, and a two-week-old infant later identified by family as Mateo Gonzalez.

Police say another young child was found inside the home and taken for medical evaluation. Orville Wright Elementary was placed on lockdown while officers searched the area, and students were later relocated to La Loma Junior High School as a precaution.

Investigators identified the suspect as 28-year-old Joaquin Escoto. Police say he was later found hiding inside a nearby residence and taken into custody without incident.

Authorities believe Escoto and Fabiola shared a child, though the exact relationship remains under investigation. Police say the case appears to have been isolated and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

For the family, this is an unimaginable loss: a grandmother, a young mother, and a newborn baby, remembered through candles, flowers, photos, stuffed animals, and a community left grieving.

SANGER, CALIFORNIA CRIME NEWS: Fresno County booking records show that Sanger Police arrested Alfredo Moreno late May 6 at 449 Faller Cir, Sanger. The public record lists allegations including assault with a firearm, criminal threat, exhibiting a deadly weapon, child-cruelty counts, prohibited-person firearm possession, and ammunition possession.

What happened on May 1, 2022? Steven Buchan Jr. was fatally beaten outside a bar in Clements, California. The case later gained attention after authorities said two of the men connected to the case were members of the Stockton chapter of the Hells Angels.

Lloyd Strack, Aaron Davis, and Jason Blasingame later pleaded guilty to manslaughter. Each received a six-year prison sentence.

But for Steven Buchan Jr.’s family, the case did not end with closure. They questioned whether the sentence truly matched the violence of what happened.

What happened on this day? On April 29, 2008, Clarence “Buddy” Mason was walking his dog in Modesto’s Airport District when a brief street encounter turned deadly.

Prosecutors later said the shooting started after a man fell off his bicycle, became angry when Mason and Shawn Tenbrink laughed, then returned with a handgun.

Mason died. Tenbrink survived. Years later, the suspect was sentenced to 28 years and 4 months in prison.

What happened on On April 28, 2019, Kiara Austin and Brian Maxey were killed after a shooting near Ashlan and Fruit in Fresno.

Police said the young couple and three others were in a car at The Parks at Fig Garden when gang members confronted them. As they tried to leave, gunmen opened fire. Investigators said at least 26 rounds were fired before the car crashed through a wall and into a canal.

Years later, Donovan Kelley was convicted in the case. But there was also a major appeal update after his original sentence.
