This month, our Jr. Farmer students got their hands a little dirty and pulled their first radishes from the planters! For many of them, it was the first time growing something from seed to harvest, and the excitement on their faces said everything! 🫜
During our Jr. Farmer program, students learn how to plant and care for their own vegetables, explore why healthy soil matters, and learn about the food that grows right here in Stanislaus County!

If you would like to bring the Jr. Farmer Program to your school, email Chanin Eredia at [email protected].

Did you know hedgerows are one of the most effective ways to restore native habitat on working and public lands, helping both the land and the landowners who rely on it?

The rows of native shrubs, flowers, and grasses help to support pollinators, improve soil health, create wildlife pathways, and reduce erosion.

This year, the ESRCD has helped plant 20 new hedgerows across East Stanislaus County! Through grant-funded projects, our team develops the pollinator plan, sources native plants, and installs the hedgerow. It’s one of the ways we support conservation work that benefits both the land and our communities!

If planting a hedgerow sounds like something you’d like to explore, email Gaby at [email protected]

Last week, we hosted our Partners in Conservation meeting with the West Stanislaus Resource Conservation District and had the chance to sit down with the people who know this land best. We spent the morning talking with local farmers, ranchers, landowners, and agency partners about conservation and restoration. What’s working, what’s not, and how the RCD can better support local ag. These real conversations make a huge impact on our work, and we’re grateful to everyone who came out and shared.

A big thank you to Christine Gemperle for sharing what’s been working in her almond orchards. We were excited to hear that her hedgerows are bringing in native pollinators and local birds that help keep insect populations down.

If you’re interested in planting a hedgerow on your land to boost native pollinators and help prevent erosion while improving soil health, email Gabby Cervantes at [email protected]
