After seeing one of our writers, Grayson, mention Emotional Support Animals (ESA’s) in his article “The Benefits of Academic Accommodations,” I decided I would expand on the process as someone who’s gone through the ESA process. I recognize the Fairmont State website is sometimes hard for new students to navigate, so I hope this can help anyone who wants to go through the process or is planning for their first semester here. I want to start off by saying ESA’s can be any domesticated animals, whereas service animals for medical use are dogs. ESA’s and Service Animals are not the same when it comes to training and laws. ESA’s are not medically trained, they are only protected by Federal Fair Housing Act (FFHA), and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). FSU’s website defines ESA’s as, “Any animal that provides emotional support alleviating one or more symptoms or effects of a person’s disability.” However, service animals are considered medical equipment for those with health issues. ESA’s are there for those who struggle with mental health and other disorders, they can alleviate loneliness, and sometimes help with depression, anxiety, and certain phobias in a housing environment like college dorms.

“I write a lot about self-care for the Columns, but I haven’t written about my favorite form of self-care yet—video games. You might be wondering; how can video games be self-care? Well, doing things you love can be very beneficial for stress, especially playing a cozy game and relaxing. My favorite cozy game, by far, is Stardew Valley.

On the very surface, Stardew Valley looks like a farming simulator. The basic premise is that your grandfather passed away and leaves his farmhouse in Stardew Valley to you. So you leave your office job behind and move to the valley and begin your life as a farmer.”

“Hello readers! Welcome to Lovebird Book Reviews where I, Avary King, review/recommend the latest and greatest of everyone’s favorite genre: romance. This is a spoiler FREE zone!

Welcome back Lovebirds! For this week’s edition, I have decided to be a little trendy. If you are like me and live in America you have been bombarded by one thing in the past month; March Madness. While I am not a loyal basketball viewer, during March I always find myself swept up in the fun aspects of March Madness. Drama, rivalries, and Cinderella stories make for incredible entertainment. Before I know it, I am wearing a Caitlin Clark jersey, while braiding my hair like Paige Bueckers. However, as I mentioned before I know virtually nothing about college basketball. Every year, my work friends create a bracket tournament where we all put in ten dollars and whoever has the winning bracket gets the money. Due to my lack of knowledge, I always pick teams based on pleasing colors and my favorite mascot (I do not recommend this strategy as I have never won the bracket tournament). But this year something felt different. I felt discouraged not knowing who actually had a chance at winning it all. I thought: what kind of bracket would it have to be for me to have a legit understanding of the teams? Then it hit me: March Madness of Books. For this week’s article, I have created a bracket of some of my favorite books. I chose 6 troupes to serve as my categories and put two books AKA teams per category. This was so much fun and I would recommend doing a bracket for any of your favorite things.”

"On Monday, April 8th, 2024, the eastern Continental United States will experience spectacular astronomical event: a solar eclipse! And what’s more, the majority of West Virginia, including Fairmont, will be directly in the path and be treated to a partial eclipse of up to 95% totality! That means while we won’t quite experience a total eclipse, it’s pretty darn close.

In Fairmont, the eclipse will begin around 2:00 pm, peak at around 3:15 pm, and end at 4:30 pm, lasting a total of two hours and thirty minutes. During this time, the world will go dark."

"Instead of focusing on bills being passed or presented in our state legislature this week, I have decided to report on some good news, which is Greece becoming the first Orthodox Christian country to legalize same-sex marriage. Same-sex union was previously legal, but to much of the church’s dismay, the country has officially legalized same-sex marriage as of February 15, 2024. Along with legalizing same-sex marriage, they extended their parental rights to same-sex couples as well. This ruling has divided the country and has upset the Orthodox Church. Greece is the 21st European Union country to legalize same-sex marriage and they have joined Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Luxemburg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. 176 lawmakers voted in favor of same-sex marriage, seventy-six opposed it, two abstained, and forty-six were not present in the house during the voting."

"Creative Sustainability Council, a long-standing student organization, is a special-interest club dedicated to the promotion of sustainable practices, education on renewable energy resources, and implementing sustainability-focused efforts on campus and in the community. A medium-sized group, this organization consists of faculty and students of all class ranks and majors. The Creative Sustainability Council focuses mainly on on-campus projects, though the organization has discussed possibly expanding to the wider community in the future. Major contributions to Fairmont State from this organization include the community garden, the arboretum and its trees, and their glass crushing services."

A Special Note from the Columns Staff: Congratulations on your inauguration, President Davis! We are very grateful for your continued support in student journalism at Fairmont State University.

"When I interviewed to be the president at Fairmont State University, I was asked several times “Why do you want to be president at Fairmont State?” Honestly, it was a hard question to answer. As I prepared for my interview, I explored everything I could about the University, its programs, and its people. And the more I discovered, the more I got the feeling that there was something truly special here, something I could not quite put into words. So, in my interview, I said things like “I want to have an impact on student, faculty and staff success,” or “I want to be a voice for higher education in a world that is increasingly hostile to it.”

“So far in 2024, West Virginia has introduced twenty-nine bills targeting transgender minors and drag performances. All of the proposed bills range in categories from healthcare to education. In this article, I will be focusing on three of the bills proposed in West Virginia’s StateLegislature and provide information of which state senators proposed the bills. Educating people about the existence of the LGBTQ+ community is not harmful, and no teacher is going out of their way to explain what people who are part of the community are doing in bed. Most of the education bills are claiming to “protect” children, targeting transgender and non-binary students, and not allowing students to use bathrooms they align with. Needless to say, the bills discussed today are mainly against transgender people, and they all have the common theme of being education centered.”

First article of the new semester is out!

“Falcons for Disability Advocacy, a brand-new student organization this semester here at Fairmont State University, is a special-interest club dedicated to improving the lives of people with disabilities. Advised by Abigail Franks, the Accessibility Services organizer, and run by a talented team of student leaders, the club’s main focuses include increasing awareness of all types of disabilities, both physical and neurodivergent, while encouraging students to build self-advocacy skills and provide social support. This organization has been long anticipated since the first interest meetings started midway through the Spring 2023 semester. The first official meeting of Falcons for Disability Advocacy is currently unscheduled, so keep an eye out for their first appearances and upcoming events across campus!”
