***BREAKING NEWS***
WVWC's official Winter Storm Snowfall Accumulation Forecast has been released! This was a VERY difficult forecast, and there is only marginal confidence that this will verify. Most of the professional forecaster out there are advertising caution with any precise amount you see on the map - we will advise the same. With that tidbit out of the way, here's some analysis:
The "nose"of warm air between the Ohio River and the mountain ridges is set to keep accumulation (AKA snow that "sticks") low for much of Central/Southern WV. Even if snow or sleet falls for a good part of the day, most will melt upon reaching the surface. Also notice the higher amounts in North Central WV and SW Pennsylvania counties... this is also a recent development. Model guidance suggests that this region will remain colder and more moist - allowing more snowfall during the crucial afternoon hours as the storm really ramps up.
Finally, this map runs through FRIDAY morning... why is this important? Cold, northwesterly air funneling in behind Gail will trigger some lake-effect snow showers all across the region, easily providing another coating to inch-and-a-half of accumulation in the area. We feel this is really connected to Gail's legacy and thus should be included as an impact. Questions? Please comment below and share with friends!
Enjoy the snow, West Virginia!
