***BREAKING NEWS***
WVWC's official Winter Storm Snowfall Accumulation Forecast has been released! This was a VERY difficult forecast, and there is only marginal confidence that this will verify. Most of the professional forecaster out there are advertising caution with any precise amount you see on the map - we will advise the same. With that tidbit out of the way, here's some analysis:

The "nose"of warm air between the Ohio River and the mountain ridges is set to keep accumulation (AKA snow that "sticks") low for much of Central/Southern WV. Even if snow or sleet falls for a good part of the day, most will melt upon reaching the surface. Also notice the higher amounts in North Central WV and SW Pennsylvania counties... this is also a recent development. Model guidance suggests that this region will remain colder and more moist - allowing more snowfall during the crucial afternoon hours as the storm really ramps up.

Finally, this map runs through FRIDAY morning... why is this important? Cold, northwesterly air funneling in behind Gail will trigger some lake-effect snow showers all across the region, easily providing another coating to inch-and-a-half of accumulation in the area. We feel this is really connected to Gail's legacy and thus should be included as an impact. Questions? Please comment below and share with friends!

Enjoy the snow, West Virginia!

We'll top out around 90 today in much of the Mountain State, with bright sunny skies dominating the weather story. That all changes as we head into tomorrow night, however, with a cold front approaching the region that'll bring showers and storms our way. The front will stall out over the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic region over the coming week, bringing us continued storm chances throughout the 7-Day Forecast. No severe weather is expected at this time, but slightly cooler, wetter conditions can be expected as we head into the weekend...

Stay tuned for the latest updates and have a great week, West Virginia!

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to fire up once again across a large part of the Mountain State today. Some of these storms could turn severe, prompting the Storm Prediction Center to highlight almost the entire area under a Slight (Level 2 out of 5) Risk. The main threats with today's storms include all modes of severe weather - including large hail, isolated tornadoes, and damaging winds, in addition to the possibility of flash flooding made more likely by the past few days of rain.

Storms will really start to pop around 2 PM and will become more widespread throughout the evening. Make sure to remain weather-aware if you'll be spending time outside as these storms will be quick movers! Stay safe and have a great day, West Virginia!

Things will be marginally cooler after today - mid-to-upper 80s rather than 90s - but the chances of showers and storms will be with us practically every day for the foreseeable future. No widespread severe weather threat is expected at this time, but any thunderstorm brings the risk of heavy, flooding rains and cloud-to-ground lightning. Make sure to stay weather aware if you'll be spending time outside this week. Stay tuned for storm updates as they are warranted! Have a great week, everyone!

Severe weather is possible once again this afternoon across the entire Forecasting Area. The Storm Prediction Center has highlighted much of the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic with a Marginal (Level 1 out of 5) Risk of severe thunderstorms. The main threat with these storms are strong, damaging winds that could cause property damage and/or power outages. Not everyone will see severe weather today, but thunderstorms are expected to widely pop-up around the state and beyond as things get warmer this afternoon. Have a way to get warnings if you will be spending time outside today! Stay safe and stay cool out there!

If you didn't get a thunderstorm yesterday, don't be too disappointed - more are on their way for the second half of the weekend into next week. The heat will be the notable weather feature in the short-term, however, with highs rising into the mid-90s for areas below 2500 feet and heat indices 10 to 15 degrees above that. The humidity will make the conditions feel more oppressive, so be sure to have a way to cool off if you're spending time outdoors.

Thunderstorms will have plenty of fuel to work with over the coming week - expect afternoon pop-up storms daily starting on Sunday. No organized severe weather is expected at this time, but stay tuned for updates as the possibility of a stronger event is possible into next week. For now, stay cool and enjoy your weekend, everyone!

Thunderstorms will return this afternoon - and some could be severe, especially in the Northern Panhandle, Western Pennsylvania, and Eastern Ohio. The Storm Prediction Center has highlighted these areas under a Slight (Level 2 out of 5) Risk of severe weather, while areas in the dark green shading are under a Marginal (Level 1 out of 5) Risk. The main threat with today's storms are damaging winds, but a few tornadoes cannot be ruled out. Showers and storms will begin to fire up around early afternoon and may organize into a line by sunset, pushing west towards The Mountains by nightfall. Have a way to get weather warnings if you'll be working or playing outside today! Stay cool and have a great day, West Virginia!

Do you miss the heat? Good news: we'll be back in the mid-90s by midweek, with storm chances also returning around the same time! In the meantime, things should be a little cooler and drier for the early week region-wide. We look to be entering a stormier pattern by the weekend, with widespread thunderstorms for the foreseeable future into next week. Have a great week, West Virginia!

A Marginal (Level 1 out of 5) Risk of severe weather is possible as we head into the afternoon today! The main threat is damaging wind gusts associated with the more organized storms. The clearer and sunnier the morning hours, the more fuel that will be available to the thunderstorms this evening. Expect the storms to start popping around mid-afternoon and continue into the nighttime hours, especially in The Mountains.

Hope you like it hot! 90s will abound along and west of the I-79 corridor. The Mountains will stay around 10-15 degrees cooler than the lowlands, with highs in the low 80s and upper 70s. Most of the day will be bright and sunny, but a few storms will pop up this afternoon between around 3 PM and sunset, which may provide some temporary relief to hotter areas in West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Areas in Virginia that are east of the ridges will also see highs in the 90s with lower chances of rain. Stay cool and have a great day, everyone!

Summer heat is here! Highs will remain in the 90s in most areas along and west of I-79. We may get some relief, however: showers and storms are making their return to the region after a relatively dry week. Many areas in The Mountains and Southern Coalfields have seen the pop-up storms over the past couple of days, and we expect those to multiply this afternoon across the northern parts of the state. These afternoon thunder-boomers will be possible throughout the first half of the week during the peak heating hours of the afternoon and evening with little chance of severe weather at this time.

Into the second half of the week, things will be drier for Thursday and Friday (although the heat will continue). We trade the heat for more widespread storms as next weekend comes around. We'll have more details on the setup for these storms as the forecast becomes clearer over the next few days, but be prepared for some interruption to any outdoor plans you might have for Saturday and Sunday! Have a great week, West Virginia!

Our Story

Welcome to The West Virginia Weather Center (WVWC). We predict the weather that impacts your life. We live in a world overrun by misinformation, driven by outside advertisements, and solely aimed at whatever can hype up ratings and viewership. The West Virginia Weather Center is different - a local, independent forecast agency designed to inform and educate everyone about the weather and how it will impact them. WVWC believes that increasing the public’s understanding of meteorological processes coincides with keeping people “ahead of the storm”. So enjoy the forecasts and graphics, and you might also learn something along the way.

Sure, there will be times where forecasts are wrong. There will be times when a forecast lacks confidence or is unclear, and we will tell you if this is the case. Our goal is never to trick you or convince you that we are magically connected to the sky... the negative stigma about forecasts “only being right half the time” while every news station preaches their version as gospel is not helping anyone. Honesty and transparency are the most important values for any media platform; it’s what WVWC is ran on every day. We want to earn your trust and have you be a part of the growing West Virginia Weather Center family. We encourage questions and discussion on any of our social media platforms and invite you to join us in the wonderful world of weather.

Sincerely,

Zack Richards - President/Owner, WVWC
